GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University and William Paterson split a conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday. William Paterson won the first game, 9-3 and Rowan had a 13-0 (five innings) shutout in the second.
In the first game, right hander Diana Schraer (jr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) pitched 6.2 innings for her 10th victory on the season. Schraer (10-1) scattered nine hits and gave up three runs, two were earned. Designated player Ana Abourashed (so. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) went two for four with two RBIs. Abourashed recorded a two run homer in the top of the seventh inning. It was her fourth home run this year. Right fielder Christine Zippler (fr. Blackwood, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with two hits (four at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. The Pioneers also had one RBI from second baseman April Sandinas-Wyssling (sr. Plainsboro, NJ/W. Windsor-Plainsboro S.), first baseman Jessica Reibis (fr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.), center fielder Brandi Kavaliauskas (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Highland Reg.) and left fielder Chelsea Winkelspecht (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape).
For Rowan, third baseman Kristin Wallace (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) went three for three with one RBI. Right fielder Heidi Smith (fr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) had two hits (four at bats) and scored one run. Designated player Jen Lake (sr. Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove) and second baseman Jenna DiDonato (fr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) each had one RBI. Right hander Danielle Lawlor (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) took the loss. Lawlor (8-3) gave up nine hits and struck out four batters.
Rowan got on the scoreboard first with one run in the second inning. Ryan scored the run on an error. William Paterson had a 7-1 lead after three runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth. In the fifth, Zippler came home on an error. Reibis singled in a run and scored on an error. Zippler, Kavaliauskas, Winkelspecht and Sardinas-Wyssling each had a RBI in the sixth.
Right hander Amanda Riegel (jr. Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) was the winning pitcher in the second game. Riegel (6-5) only allowed two hits and had two strikeouts. It was her third shutout. The Profs totaled 14 hits. First baseman Jamie Assini (sr. Deptford, NJ/East Brunswick) went two for four with six RBIs and one run scored. Assini recorded a grand slam home run in the third inning. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and DiDonato each contributed with two RBIs. Lake had two hits (four at bats), a solo home run and two runs scored. Ryan and Smith added two hits apiece.
Rowan is home again on Saturday, April 7 against New Jersey City University at 1 p.m.
