GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team had a 5-3 victory over visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College in a nonconference game on Tuesday.
The Profs improve to 10-8, while the Griffins have a 10-6 record. Right hander Tyler Dempsey (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) pitched four scoreless innings in relief for his second win of the season. Right hander Kevin O’Hara (so. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) struck out two batters in the ninth inning to earn his fourth save. Gwynedd-Mercy right hander Sean Middleton (so. Perkasie, PA/Lansdale Catholic) allowed three runs, one earned, in six innings for the loss.
Rowan designated hitter Tim Edmeads (sr. Newfield, NJ/Buena Reg.) went two for four with two runs scored, one RBI and a home run. Catcher Paul Urbanovich (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) had two hits (three at bats), one run scored and a double. First baseman Rob Ritterson (jr. Sewell, NJ/George Washington (PA)) contributed with one run scored and one RBI, while third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) crossed the plate once and had one hit.
For Gwynedd-Mercy, designated hitter Mark Mattes (jr. Doylestown, PA/C.B. East) was one for four with a RBI and a double. Shortstop Scott Carroll (fr. Churchville, PA/Council Rock South) added one run and one RBI. Catcher Nick DiEnno (so. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) and second baseman Ken Bengtson (so. Jamison, PA/C.B. East) each scored once and right fielder Anthony Capella (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) drove in one run. Third baseman Tom McMenamin (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) was two for three at the plate.
In the second inning, Gwynedd-Mercy took a 1-0 lead after DiEnno came home on a ground out by Carroll. In the bottom half, Ritterson and Urbanovich scored on an error to put Rowan up 2-1. The Griffins tied the game in the top of the third following a RBI double down the left field line by Mattes. Edmeads hit a solo homer, his first on the year, in the sixth. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Ritterson knocked in Edmeads with a sacrifice fly and Ready crossed the plate after an error. Gwynedd-Mercy got one run in the top of the ninth when Carroll scored on a bases loaded walk by Capella.
Rowan returns to its conference schedule when it hosts William Paterson University on Thursday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m.
