WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team had a 14-2 victory over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent William Paterson University on Monday.
Rowan improves to 17-14 overall and 7-7 in the conference. William Paterson has a 15-14-2 overall record and a 3-10-1 NJAC mark. Left hander Ryan Kulik (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) only allowed three hits and struck out eight batters in seven innings for his third win of the season. Relievers Kevin O’Hara (so. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Tyler Dempsey (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) each threw one inning. Right hander Steve VandeVrede (jr. Lincoln Park, NJ/Pequannock) took the loss for the Pioneers.
Third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) led the Profs with four hits (six at bats), three runs scored, three RBIs and two doubles. Designated hitter Paul Urbanovich (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) went two for four with three RBIs, two runs scored, a home run and a double. Center fielder Roger Turley (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) added three hits in five trips to the plate, three runs scored, two RBIs and a triple. Left fielder Frank Hasenauer (jr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy), first baseman Rob Ritterson (jr. Sewell, NJ/George Washington (PA)) and catcher Robert Fox (jr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) each had one run scored and one RBI. First baseman Shawn Counard (sr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) drove in two runs, while second baseman Roland Rodriguez (fr. Miami, FL/Miami Killian) scored twice.
For the Pioneers, third baseman Chris Arecchi (jr. Hazlet, NJ/St. John Vianney) and catcher Don Hays (jr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) had one hit and one runs scored apiece. Pinch hitter Jim Gregory (fr. Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) had William Paterson’s lone RBI.
Rowan scored one run in the second inning and four in the third for a 5-0 lead. Fox singled in Urbanovich in the second. In the fourth, Ready singled in Turley, who reached base with a triple, and Urbanovich hit a three run homer. The Profs added one in the fifth when Ritterson singled home Ready. In the sixth inning, Hasenauer’s single drove in Fox, Turley had a two run single and Ready’s double plated Turley. Counard had a two run double in the top of the eighth inning to give Rowan a 12-0 advantage. William Paterson got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom half. Gregory walked with the bases loaded, scoring Arecchi and Hays came home on a double play. The Profs scored their final two runs in the top of the ninth inning. Pinch hitter David Zavistoski (fr. Edison, NJ/Edison) had a RBI double and Hasenauer crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Ready.
Rowan travels to Haverford College for a nonconference game on Tuesday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m.
