NEWARK, NJ – Behind the pitching of Gary Winker and Brian McLaughlin, Rowan University swept a conference doubleheader, 5-2 and 12-1 at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.
In the first game, Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) pitched eight innings and closer Tyler Dempsey (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) earned his fifth save. Winkler scattered eight hits and had five strikeouts. Dempsey had a scoreless ninth with three strikeouts.
Rowan third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) went two for two with a double and one RBI. Right fielder Tim Edmeads (sr. Newfield, NJ/Buena Reg.) added one hit (five at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. First baseman Rob Ritterson (jr. Sewell, NJ/George Washington (PA)) contributed with two hits in four trips to the plate.
For Rutgers-Newark, third baseman Christian Diaz (so. New Milford, NJ/New Milford) went two for four with a home run and two runs scored. Catcher Gerard Russomanno (so. Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley) had two hits (four at bats) and one RBI.
Rutgers-Newark led 2-1 after Diaz’s solo shot in the fourth inning. Rowan came back with three runs in the eighth to lead 4-2. Edmeads drove in the first one with a single. Left fielder Frank Hasenauer (jr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) had a RBI single and McLaughlin’s (sr. Glendora, NJ/Trieton Reg.) sac fly scored Edmeads. Shortstop Tim Barnshaw (so. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) scored the Profs’ final run on a passed ball in the ninth.
Rowan totaled 16 hits in the nightcap. Catcher Bobby Fox (jr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) went three for five with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Ready contributed with two hits (three at bats) and three RBIs. Center fielder Roger Turley (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury), designated hitter Paul Urbanovich (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) and Edmeads contributed with two hits apiece.
McLaughlin (2-2) was on the mound for eight innings. He only gave up four hits and one earned run. Kevin O’Hara (so. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pitched the last inning.
The Profs are 16-14 overall and 6-7 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raiders have an 11-21 record with a 7-7 conference mark. Rowan’s next game is at William Paterson University on Monday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m..
