GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team took both games of a conference doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark on Saturday. The Profs won the first one, 6-3 and had a 4-1 victory in the second.
Rowan is 19-11 overall and 7-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Rutgers-Newark has an 11-19 record with a 1-11 conference mark.
Right hander Amanda Riegel (jr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) was the winning pitcher in the first game. Riegel (9-6) scattered six hits and struck out eight. Designated player Kim Ryan (sr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/ S. Brunswick) and right fielder Heidi Smith (fr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) each contributed with two RBIs. Smith had two hits, a double and a triple and scored one run. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) went one for two with one RBI and one run scored.
For Rutgers-Newark, shortstop Charlotte Labate (jr. North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) had one hit in three at bats, a double and two RBIs. Right fielder Elena Morge (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) recorded a home run, her fifth on the season. Catcher Nikki Spampinato (jr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) had two hits in three trips to the plate. Right hander Christine Sciarra (sr. Lodi, NJ/Lodi) took the loss on the mound.
In the third inning, the Scarlet Raiders had a 2-0 lead after Labate’s two run double. She knocked in third baseman Jen Raido (sr. Secaucus, NJ/St. Mary’s (Rutherford)) and first baseman Carrie McGuire (jr. East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park). The Profs came back with all six of their runs in the fifth inning. Navarro singled in the first run and Ryan had a two RBI single. Smith’s triple brought home two runs and she crossed the plate on an error. Morge led off the sixth inning with a homer for Rutgers-Newark’s final run.
Rowan third baseman Kristin Wallace (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) went two for three with a double, two RBIs and one run scored in the second contest. Navarro added two hits with four at bats and one run scored. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with two hits in four at bats and scored one run. Danielle Lawlor (jr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) pitched a complete game for her 10th victory.
Rowan was ahead 4-0 after two runs in the first and second innings. Wallace’s double drove in the first run and she came home on a passed ball. In the second, Brenner scored on an error and Wallace had a RBI single. Rutgers-Newark spoiled the shutout in the sixth. With one out, Labate walked and advanced to third on Morge’s double. Designated player Lauren Herbig (sr. Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland) grounded out to first and Labate came home. Raido went two for four while Labatte had one hit and scored one run.
Rowan travels to The College of New Jersey on Sunday, April 22 for a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader.
