GLASSBORO, NJ – Shortstop Jeff Toth scored the winning run in the top of the 10th inning to give The College of New Jersey a 4-3 win over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday.
Toth (so. Parlin, NJ/Sayreville) reached base with a single and stole second. He advanced to third on an error and continued home on a second error. Rowan tied the game at three with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Right fielder Tim Edmeads (sr. Newfield, NJ/Buena Reg.) singled in a run and first baseman Rob Ritterson’s (jr. Sewell, NJ/George Washington (PA)) ground out knocked in third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.).
TCNJ jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. First baseman Blake Bullis (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) and Toth came home on an error. The Lions added one run in the fifth inning on a RBI single by center fielder Dave Mebs (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson). The Profs got one run in the bottom of the sixth when shortstop Tim Barnshaw (so. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) reached home on an error.
TCNJ improves to 17-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Rowan has a 12-12 overall record and a 3-5 NJAC mark. Right hander Dave Waseleski (sr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) earned his four victory of the season in relief. He threw 2.1 innings, giving up one earned run. Righty Bill Opel (sr. Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) pitched the last inning for his second save. Pitcher Blake Ortiz (sr. Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) started the game and did not allow an earned run in 6.2 innings. Rowan right hander Tyler Dempsey (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) tossed two innings, giving up one run for the loss. Starter Gary Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) pitched eight innings without permitting an earned run.
Toth led the Lions with two hits (four at bats) and two runs scored. Mebs went one for five with one RBI, while third baseman Matt Zonies (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Bullis each scored one run. For the Profs, Edmeads and Ritterson each contributed with one hit and one RBI. Center fielder Roger Turley (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury), Barnshaw and Ready had one run apiece.
Rowan travels to Ramapo College on Saturday, April 14 for a NJAC doubleheader at noon. TCNJ is at Montclair State University on Saturday for a noon doubleheader.
