GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader with Montclair State University on Saturday. Rowan won the first game, 8-6 and Montclair State had a 9-1 victory in game two.
Rowan is 9-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Montclair State has a 9-9 overall record and a 2-2 NJAC mark. Rowan reliever Conrad Renner (jr. Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) pitched one scoreless inning, striking out three hitters for his first win of the season. Left hander Ryan Kulik (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) started the game and allowed two earned runs in the six innings, while striking out seven batters. Closer Kevin O’Hara (so. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) threw the last two innings without giving up a run for his third save. Right hander Tim Stringer (jr. Annandale, NJ/N. Hunterdon) went six innings, struck out eight hitters and gave up four earned runs in the loss.
Catcher Robert Fox (jr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) led the Profs with two hits (four at bats), three RBIs and one run scored. Designated hitter Tim Edmeads (sr. Newfield, NJ/Buena Reg.) went one for two with three runs scored. Third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) and pinch hitter Paul Urbanovich (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) each had one RBI.
For the Red Hawks, left fielder Rob Bowness (sr. Sparta, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) was three for four with a run scored and double. Third baseman Robert Clark (jr. Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) added two hits (five at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. Designated hitter Jeff Miller (sr. Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) and right fielder Ed Kloepping (so. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) had one run and one RBI apiece.
Catcher Andrew Vicaro (sr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) put Montclair State up 1-0 with a RBI single in the top of the first inning. In the fourth, Kloepping singled in Miller and Kloepping scored on an error. In the bottom half, Fox grounded out to second base, scoring Edmeads. The Red Hawks went ahead 4-1 in the sixth, following a RBI single to center field by Clark. The Profs tied the game up in the bottom of the inning. Fox singled in Edmeads, Urbanovich had a single that brought home McLaughlin and Fox came home on an error. In the seventh, Ready singled in center fielder Roger Turley (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury), who reached base with a double. Fox had a single to right center field, plating Ready. Edmeads came home on a bases loaded balk and right fielder Frank Hasenauer (jr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) scored on a wild pitch. Montclair State had two runs in the eighth with two singles.
In the second game, right hander Jesus Castano (fr. West New York, NJ/Memorial) pitched a complete game, scattering four hits and striking out five batters for the Red Hawks. Left hander Joe Cichy (jr. Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) allowed five earned runs in 1.2 innings for the loss.
Miller went two for five with two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Clark contributed with two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Second baseman Kevin Cuozzi (jr. Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) went two for four with two RBIs and one run scored. Center fielder Michael Nunes (jr. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) added two runs scored and one RBI, while first baseman Lou Politan (jr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) had one run and one RBI.
For Rowan, third baseman Tony Alonso (fr. Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) went one for two with one run scored and a double. First baseman Rob Ritterson (jr. Sewell, NJ/George Washington (PA)), shortstop Tim Barnshaw (so. Dayton, NJ/S. Brunswick) and Edmeads each had one hit. Hasenauer had the Profs’ lone RBI.
In the second inning, Montclair State right fielder Scott Evangelist (so. Northfield, NJ/Holy Spirit) scored on a single by Cuozzi. Shortstop James Scelzo’s (jr. Staten Island, NY/Petrides) single plated Politan. Nunes singled down the left field line, scoring Cuozzi and Miller had a two run single that brought home Nunes and Scelzo. The Red Hawks added one run in the third and two in the sixth inning. Cuozzi had a RBI single in the third, while Clark’s single in the sixth scored two runs. Rowan’s run came in the seventh. Alonso scored on a sacrifice fly by Hasenauer. Politan’s sacrifice fly in the ninth allowed Miller to score the final run.
Rowan hosts Gwynedd-Mercy College on Tuesday, April 3 at 3 p.m.
