Rowan Wins NJAC Opener Over Rutgers-Camden, 5-2

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team scored three runs in the eighth inning for a 5-2 victory over conference opponent Rutgers-Camden on Friday.

Pinch hitter Bobby Fox (jr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) singled in catcher Paul Urbanovich (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) for the go ahead run (3-2). Urbanovich led off with a walk and advanced two bases on a sac bunt by right fielder Frank Hasenauer (jr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy). Second baseman Joe Franceschini (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) recorded a two run triple, scoring pinch hitter Brian McLaughlin (sr. Glendora, NJ/Triton Reg.) and Fox.

The win gave Rowan head coach Juan Ranero his 150th victory at the University. In seven seasons, Ranero has a 150-96-1 record. This is the second year of his second stint as head coach of the Profs. His career record stands at 259-199-1 (11 seasons).

Right hander Tyler Dempsey (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) was the winning pitcher in relief. Dempsey (1-1) went two innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. Reliever Adam Sanchez (so. Leominster, MA/Worcester Academy) suffered the loss for the Scarlet Raptors.

For Rowan, center fielder Roger Turley (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) had one hit in three at bats and one RBI. The Profs totaled six hits, one apiece from six different players. Designated hitter Mark Wickersham (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) compiled three hits (four at bats) and one RBI for Rutgers-Camden. Center fielder Nate Buchter (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) went three for four with one run scored. Catcher Tom Terrill (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with one RBI. The Scarlet Raptors finished the game with nine hits.

Rutgers-Camden tied the score at two in the top of the eighth inning. Right fielder Mike Morris (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) reached first on a fielder’s choice and he stole second. Wickersham scored Morris with a single.

The Profs got on the scoreboard first with one run in the third. Designated hitter Tim Edmeads (sr. Newfield, NJ/Buena Reg.) came home on a double steal. In the fourth inning, the Scarlet Raptors tied the score with a RBI single by Terrill and Buchter scored the run. In the bottom half, Rowan took the lead on Turley’s sacrifice fly.

Rowan improves to 8-7 overall and 1-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rutgers-Camden has a 9-9 record with a 0-2 conference mark. On Saturday, March 31, Rowan hosts Montclair State University while Ramapo College plays at Rutgers-Camden. Both contests are noon conference doubleheaders.
