Softball Wins Two On Second Day Of Virginia Wesleyan Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University softball defeated SUNY Oneonta, 4-0 and Frostburg State University, 10-0 in six innings in the second day of play at the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday.

Rowan improves to 3-1 on the season. Against SUNY Oneonta (0-4), right hander Amanda Riegel (jr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) tossed 6.2 shutout innings. She only allowed one hit and struck out seven batters. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) went one for four with two RBIs. Catcher Kim Ryan (sr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) and center fielder Kristina Brenner (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) each contributed with one hit. Ryan recorded two RBIs, while Brenner scored two runs. Left fielder Stacy Haas (sr. Florence, NJ/Florence Twp. Mem.) was two for three with one run scored.

Ryan had a single in the first inning that brought home designated player Jen Lake (sr. Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove) and Brenner. In the second inning, Wallace’s single scored Haas and Brenner.

In the second game versus Frostburg State, right hander Danielle Lawlor (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) gave up six hits and struck out four hitters in six innings for the win. Wallace was one for four with two runs scored, one RBI and a home run. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) was one for four with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Lake totaled three hits (three at bats), one run and one RBI.

Rowan got on the scoreboard with four runs in the fourth inning. Wallace led off with a solo home run. Pinch hitter Stephanie Taraschi (fr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) singled in pinch runner Heidi Smith (fr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.). Haas drew a bases loaded walk and Ryan came home. Pinch hitter Alyssa Glenn (fr. Woodbridge, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) hit into a fielder’s choice that plated shortstop Jenna DiDonato (fr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert). In the sixth inning, Brenner grounded out and right fielder Amanda Brown (jr. Audobon, NJ/Audubon) came home. Navarro followed with a double than scored Haas. Lake’s single knocked in Navarro and Wallace crossed the plate on an error. First baseman Jamie Assini (sr. Deptford, NJ/East Brunswick) drove in Lake and Ryan scored on an error.

Rowan will compete in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL from March 10-17. On Saturday, March 10, plays Westminster College (PA) at 11 a.m. and Concordia University (WI) at 3 p.m.
