SALISBURY, MD – The 26th ranked Salisbury University baseball team defeated 27th ranked Rowan University, 7-2 on Monday.
With the win, Salisbury improves to 20-3, while Rowan has a 6-7 record. Left hander Bryan Brainer pitched 8.1 innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight batters for his fifth victory of the season. Profs’ left hander Joe Cichy (jr. Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) threw six innings, allowing three earned runs for his first loss of the year.
The Sea Gulls were led by third baseman Alex Vitale with two hits (three at bats), two runs scored, two RBIs, a double and a home run. Right fielder Andrew Jensen went three for three with two runs scored. Second baseman Mark Bostwick added two hits in four trips to the plate, two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Brian Camper was one for two with two RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Designated hitter Justin Armiger scored once, while left fielder Randy Boyle drove in one run.
For Rowan, left fielder Frank Hasenauer (jr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) recorded two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Right fielder Paul Urbanovich (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) and third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) both had one hit in four at bats and one run scored. Urbanovich had Rowan only extra base hit with a double.
Salisbury took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Vitale hit a two run homer that knocked in Jensen. The Sea Gulls added one run in the sixth and seventh innings. Bostwick had a RBI single in the sixth and Boyle singled to left fielder, plating Armiger in the seventh inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Bostwick drove in Vitale with a single. Camper followed with a two run homer for a 7-0 advantage. Rowan scored both its runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two run single by Hasenauer.
Rowan hosts Elizabethtown College in a nonconference game on Tuesday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m.
