GLASSBORO, NJ – Attack Brianna Gillin scored six goals and assisted on eight others to lead Montclair State University to a 15-12 road victory over Rowan University on Saturday.
The Red Hawks improve to 3-1, while Rowan has a 3-4 record. For Montclair State, attack Ann Daily (sr. Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) had three goals. Attack Shauna Brocklebank (sr. Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) added two goals and one assist. Attacks Marykate DiBenedetto (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Nicole Roselle (jr. Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) and midfielders Jennifer Tanis (jr. Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp.) and Morgan MacPhee (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) scored one goal apiece.
Midfielder Kelly Angstadt (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) led Rowan with five goals. Attack Katie Kline (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and defender Shana Smeriglio (sr. Ocean, NJ/Ocean Twp.) each found the net twice. Midfielders Christina Ivy (sr. Montville, NJ/Montville Twp.) and Therese Jones (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) totaled one goal and one assist apiece. Attack Caitlin Meseroll (jr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) contributed with one goal.
Montclair State outshot Rowan, 26-21. Goalie Kristin Kuhmann (sr. Beachwood, NJ/Toms River S.) made five saves for the Red Hawks. In the Profs’ net, goalie Alicia Mannino (so. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) stopped seven shots.
Kline put Rowan up 1-0 with her first goal at 1:01. Gillin (sr. Cinnaminson,NJ/Cinnaminson) tied the game up 11 seconds later. Angstadt (5:17) and Kline (7:01) each scored once to give Rowan a 3-1 advantage. After two goals were scored by each team, the Red Hawks had two straight goals from Tanis (11:26) and Brocklebank (14:38) to tie the game at five. The Profs answered with two straight goals from Smeriglio (17:49) and Angstadt (18:00). Daily and Gillin each had a goal to make the score 7-7 at 20:45. After each team found the net, Jones’ goal with 11 seconds left in the half put Rowan ahead 9-8 at intermission.
The Red Hawks opened the second period with four consecutive goals for a 12-9 lead. Daily scored twice, while MacPhee and Gillin each had one goal. Angstadt’s goal at 49:54 cut the deficit to two (12-10). Gillin added two more goals to give the Red Hawks a 14-10 advantage. Smeriglio had a goal at 54:52, but DiBenedetto countered with one just over a minute later. Angstadt ended the scoring with a goal at 56:29.
