GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split games with visiting College of Staten Island on Thursday. Rowan blanked Staten Island, 8-0 (five innings) in the first game while the Dolphins came back to take the second, 3-2.
Right hander Danielle Lawlor (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) only gave up one hit for her fifth shutout on the season. Lawlor has a 7-1 record. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) had a home run and three RBIs. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) went two for two with one run scored. Right fielder Heidi Smith (fr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Profs got on the scoreboard in the first inning with Wallace’s three run homer. Rowan went on to score fourth runs in the third. Smith drove in two runs with a double and she stole home. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) had a RBI on a fielder’s choice, scoring left fielder Stacy Haas (sr. Florence, NJ/Florence Twp. Mem.). Rowan ended the game with one run in the bottom of the fifth because of the eight run rule. Smith led off with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. She went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Haas and scored on a wild pitch.
Pitcher Michelle Gardella went the distance in the second game for the Dolphins’ victory. Gardella scattered four hits and struck out four. Amanda Riegel (jr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) took the loss. Riegel (4-4) gave up eight hits and two earned runs.
For Staten Island, third baseman Brianne Russo and shortstop Christina D’Arpa each had two hits. Right fielder Megan Donohue and Gardella each recorded one RBI. Rowan designated player Kim Ryan (sr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/S. Brunswick) went two for three with a double and two RBIs.
Staten Island went up 3-0 in the fourth inning. Rowan rallied for two runs in the sixth. With two outs, Ryan doubled in first baseman Jamie Assini (sr. Deptford, NJ/East Brunswick) and catcher Jen Lake (sr. Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove). Assini got on base with a walk and Lake singled.
Rowan is back in action at Haverford College on Thursday, March 29 at 2:30 p.m.
