GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team won 14-6 over Widener University in the season opener on Thursday.
Attack Caitlin Meseroll (jr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) led the Profs with four goals and defender Maureen Doyle (sr. Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) followed with three. Attacks Carly Welsh (so. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) and Lauren Crennan (so. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and defender Shana Smeriglio (sr. Ocean, NJ/Ocean Twp.) each scored twice while midfielder Therese Jones (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) hit the net once. Attack Tori Hart (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) recorded two assists and Smeriglio had one.
For the Pride, midfielder/attack Jackie Elliott (fr. Secane, PA/Uper Darby) totaled three goals. Attack Meghan Mazey (fr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery), midfielder Kerri Schulz (jr. Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) and midfielder/attack Grace Cavanaugh (so. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) had one goal apiece.
Rowan compiled 31 total shots while Widener took 17. In the Profs’ net, Alicia Mannino (so. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) made five saves. Goalie Brianna Tarry (sr. Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) stopped eight shots for the Pride.
The Profs started the game with three straight goals. Meseroll, Welsh and Crennan each scored before Elliott had Widener’s first goal at 6:51. Rowan was ahead 5-2 after the first half. Meseroll and Crennan each scored twice. Mazey’s goal pulled the Pride within three (6-3) at 32:56. The Profs answered with four straight goals in the next five minutes. Smeriglio contributed with two while Jones and Meseroll each had one.
Rowan’s next game is on Saturday, March 3 against Franklin & Marshall College. The game will be played at the U.S. Turf Complex in Downingtown, PA at 6 p.m.
