VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University softball team split its first two games of the season at the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament. Rowan lost to Lynchburg College, 10-1 (six innings) and came back to win 10-0 (five innings) over Polytechnic University.
Against Lynchburg, third baseman Kristin Wallace (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) had two hits in three at bats. The Profs’ lone run came in the third inning. Wallace singled then there was an error and second baseman Lauren Navarro (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) scored.
Right hander Amanda Riegel (jr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) recorded the win on the mound against Polytechnic. Reigel only gave up two hits in the five inning shutout. Wallace went three for three at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Catcher Jen Lake (sr. Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove) contributed with two hits (three at bats), a triple, two RBIs and one run scored. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) went two for four with one RBI and one run scored. Navarro added a triple and scored one run.
Wallace put Rowan on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the first inning. The Profs had four runs in the second and fourth. Lake tripled in one run in the fourth inning. Rowan’s final run came in the fifth.
In the second day of the tournament, Rowan will play SUNY Oneonta at 11 a.m. and Frostburg State University at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
