Rowan Defeats Fifth Ranked Wis.-Stevens Point

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL – The Rowan University baseball team ended its Florida trip with a 7-6 victory over Wis.-Stevens Point on Saturday.

The Profs improve to 5-5 on the season while the Pointers have a 2-1 record. In the American Baseball Coaches Association Preseason Poll, Wis.-Stevens Point was ranked fifth while Rowan was 27th.

Left hander Ryan Kulik (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) pitched six innings for the win. Kulik (1-1) scattered seven hits and struck out five. Right hander Brian McLaughlin (sr. Glendora, NJ/Triton Reg.) went two innings and right hander Tyler Dempsey (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights, NJ) pitched the ninth.

Center fielder Roger Turley (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) went three for five with one RBI. Catcher Paul Urbanovich (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and a double. Right fielder Bruce Reibis (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.), designated hitter Rob Ritterson (jr. Sewell, NJ/George Washington (PA)), second baseman Joe Franceschini (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) and shortstop Roland Rodriguez (fr. Miami, FL/Miami Killian) each had one RBI.

Rowan jumped out to 6-0 lead after two runs in the first, second and third innings. In the first inning, Franceschini and third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) both scored on an error with Urbanovich at the plate. Ritterson and first baseman Shawn Counard (sr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored on ground outs in the second with Rodriguez and Franceschini earning RBIs. Counard had gotten on base with a double. In the third inning, Reibis drove in Urbanovich with a single and scored on a single by Ritterson.

Wis.-Stevens Point got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the third. Left fielder Joel Hojnacki recorded a home run. Rowan’s final run came in the top of the sixth inning. Turley had a RBI single that scored Franceschini. The Pointers added one run in the sixth and eighth innings and they rallied for three more in the ninth.

In the home opener, Rowan hosts Elizabethtown College on Wednesday, March 21 at 3 p.m.
