PORT CHARLOTTE, FL – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 6-2 on Thursday.
With the win, Rowan improves to 4-5. Stevens Tech has a 2-7 record. Left hander Joe Cichy (jr. Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) threw eight innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out seven hitters for his third victory of the season. Reliever Kevin O’Hara (so. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pitched one scoreless inning for his first save of the year. Ducks’ pitcher Scott Picerno (jr. Bayonne, NJ/Hudson Catholic Reg.) gave up four runs in the ninth inning for the loss.
The Profs were led by third baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) with two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one double. Catcher Paul Urbanovich (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) went one for two with two RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Right fielder Frank Hasenauer (jr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) added one hit (five at bats), one run and one RBI. Center fielder Roger Turley (jr. Roxbury, NJ/Succasunna) was one for four with two RBIs, one run scored and a triple.
For Stevens Tech, shortstop Adam Sandt (sr. Allentown, PA/William Allen) recorded three hits in four at bats and one run scored. Right fielder Russ Grimes (fr. South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick), center fielder Joe Gunshor (so. Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) and first baseman John Frustaci (jr. Franklin Lakes, NJ/Paramus Catholic) each went two for four. Gunshor and Frustaci posted a double and one RBI apiece.
Stevens Tech took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Gunshor doubled to right field, scoring Sandt. The Ducks’ second run came in the fourth inning. Frustaci’s single to right center field brought home Gunshor. Rowan tied the game in the seventh inning. Urbanovich hit a two run homer that knocked in left fielder Bruce Reibis (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.). In the ninth, second baseman Joe Franceschini (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) and shortstop Roland Rodriguez (fr. Miami, FL/Miami Killian) came home on Turley’s triple. Hasenauer recorded a RBI single that plated Turley and Ready doubled to right center field, scoring Hasenauer.
