KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball won two games in Florida on Wednesday. Rowan defeated the Coast Guard Academy, 10-1 and Webster University (MO), 8-0. Both games only went five innings because of the eight run rule.
Right hander Amanda Riegel (jr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) was the winning pitcher against Coast Guard. Riegel (4-2) gave up three hits and struck out five. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) went two for three with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) contributed with three hits (three at bats) and three runs scored.
Coast Guard (1-5) scored its lone run in the first inning. Rowan totaled four runs in the bottom half. Wallace drove in the first run with a single. Catcher Jen Lake (sr. Carney's Point, NJ/Penns Grove) singled in Navarro and Wallace came home on a pass ball. Shortstop Jenna DiDonato (fr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) scored Lake with a sacrifice fly.
The Profs added four more runs in the second and two in the third. In the second, Wallace doubled in two runs. Lake had a sacrifice fly that scored Wallace and designated player Kim Ryan (sr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) came home on a pass ball. First baseman Jamie Assini (sr. Deptford, NJ/East Brunswick) and Navarro scored on a fielder’s choice in the third inning.
Against Webster, right hander Danielle Lawlor (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) record her fifth victory on the season. Lawlor (5-1) only allowed three hits and had two strikeouts. Wallace contributed with two hits in four at bats, one double, one RBI and scored one run. DiDonato went two for three with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Heidi Smith (fr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) added two hits (three at bats) and one run scored.
In the first inning, Wallace doubled in Assini for the first run. Left fielder Stacy Haas (sr. Florence, NJ/Florence Twp. Mem.) singled in a run and Smith scored on an error in the second. Assini also had a RBI double.
The Profs went on to score one run in the third and fourth innings. In the third, DiDonato had a RBI single. Lake scored Wallace with a double in the fourth. Rowan ended the scoring with two runs in the fifth. Brenner and Navarro both crossed home plate because of errors.
The Profs have an overall record of 9-3. Rowan ends its spring trip on Friday, March 16 against Marietta College at 1 p.m. and Mount St. Joseph at 5 p.m.
