Rowan Loses To Simpson But Rebounds To Defeat McDaniel

KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball lost to Simpson College (IA), 3-1, but rebounded to defeat McDaniel College (MD), 15-3 at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday.

Against Simpson (7-0), right hander Amanda Riegel (jr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Riegel (3-1) struck out three batters. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) went two for four at the plate.

Simpson went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a two run double by right fielder Shyann Warrick. In the fourth, Rowan cut the deficit to one with a RBI single by first baseman Jamie Assini (sr. Deptford, NJ/East Brunswick) that brought home third baseman Kristin Wallace (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.). Simpson added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Versus McDaniel (2-3), pitcher Danielle Lawlor (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) threw five innings, striking out eight hitters. Lawlor (3-1) allowed three earned runs on six hits. Left fielder Stacy Haas (sr. Florence, NJ/Florence Twp. Mem.) recorded two hits (four at bats) and three RBIs. Wallace went three for three with four RBIs, a double, a triple and a home run. Navarro added a double and a RBI.

McDaniel got on the scoreboard first with one run in the top of the first inning. Rowan answered with seven runs in the bottom half. Navarro and Wallace each had a RBI double. Assini singled in Wallace and shortstop Sarah Carangelo’s (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) single plated designated player Jen Lake (sr. Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove) and catcher Kim Ryan (sr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick). Assini came home on a grounded out and Haas knocked Carangelo in with a single.

Rowan added seven more runs in the second inning. Wallace led off with a home run. Right fielder Amanda Brown (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) and center fielder Kristina Brenner (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) each singled in a run. Haas’ single brought home Brown and Carangelo and Wallace’s triple scored Brenner and Haas. McDaniel had one run in the third inning to make the score 14-2. In the fourth, designated player Heidi Smith (fr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) hit a triple and second baseman Alyssa Glenn (fr. Woodbridge, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) crossed the plate. The Green Terror added one run in the top of the fifth inning.

Rowan improves to 6-2 overall and will face Penn State Behrend and Rhode Island College on Tuesday, March 13 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
