Profs Win First Two In Florida

KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team started its Florida trip with two victories on Saturday. Rowan defeated Westminister College (PA), 9-8 and Concordia University (WI), 5-0.

Against Westminster, Amanda Riegel (jr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) pitched a complete game for her third win this season. Riegel (3-0) gave up five earned runs and had four strikeouts.

Westminster took the lead 8-7 in the top of the sixth inning. Rowan tied the score in the bottom half. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) reached base with a single. She scored the tying run on a double by catcher Kim Ryan (sr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick). The Profs recorded the winning run in the seventh. Pinch hitter Melanie Sura (so. Linden, NJ/Linden) crossed home plate on left fielder Stacy Haas’ (sr. Florence, NJ/Florence Twp. Mem.) single. Sura had a single and stole second base.

Pitcher Danielle Lawlor (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) was on the mound for the shutout against Concordia. Lawlor (2-1) only allowed four hits and she struck out three. First baseman Jamie Assini (sr. Deptford, NJ/East Brunswick) went two for three with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Amanda Brown (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) contributed with two hits in three at bats. Shortstop Jenna DiDonata (fr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinhert) compiled three RBIs.

Rowan had a 2-0 lead after the second inning. DiDonata drove in two runs with a single. After the third, the Profs were ahead 5-0. Catcher Jen Lake (sr. Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove) doubled in Wallace and Assini had a double that scored Lake. DiDonata’s sacrifice fly brought home Ryan.

The Profs are 5-1 overall. Rowan’s spring trip continues on Sunday, March 11 against Simpson College (IA) at 9 a.m. and McDaniel College (MD) at 11 a.m.
