CAMDEN, NJ – Rowan University had three players score in double figures in an 85-65 victory over Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday.
Rowan improves to 17-5 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Rutgers-Camden has a 5-18 overall record and a 1-10 NJAC mark.
Rowan was led by guard Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) with 25 points. He made 10 of 17 field goals and five of nine free throws. Forward Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and guard Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) scored 17 points apiece. Byrnes now has 1,407 career points, moving him ahead of Frank Hudson (1,396 points from 1975-79) into fifth place on Rowan’s all-time scoring list. Byrnes and Bowser also added six and five rebounds respectively. Forward Dwayne Reevey (jr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) grabbed seven boards, while guard Dan Redden (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) dished seven assists.
For Rutgers-Camden, guard Dane Nicholson (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) and forward Sydney Francis (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) each scored 18 points. Francis pulled down eight rebounds. Forward Antoine Miller (so. Camden, NJ/Medical Arts) contributed with 12 points and nine rebounds.
In the first half, the game was tied twice, 9-9 (14:25) and 11-11 (13:51) before the Profs took the lead for good. Rowan went up by six points (17-11) after two free throws by Baker at 11:29. Five straight points by Rutgers-Camden guard Eric Richardson (so. Camden, NJ/Camden) pulled the Scarlet Raptors within one (17-16) at 10:41. The Profs led by three points (30-27) after a layup by Francis at 5:42. Rowan had a 16-3 run to end the period. Redden had seven points, while forward Tim Cook (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) added four points in the stretch. Rowan was ahead 46-30 at intermission.
Baker led all first half scorers with 14 points and Bowser followed with 10. Francis had nine points for Rutgers-Camden.
Rowan led by 24 points (57-33) at 16:03 in the second stanza. Rutgers-Camden would come as close as 13 points at 11:18 and 8:52. Rowan’s biggest lead of the game was 26 points (85-59) with 1:55 remaining following a layup Baker.
