NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rowan University men and women’s swimming teams competed at the final day of the Metropolitan Championships on Sunday. The men finished in second place out of 16 teams with 1272.5 points. The women’s team totaled 985 points for fourth place out of 20 schools. The three day event was held at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.

The men’s 400 free relay took second place in 3:10.29. The relay consisted of Kevin Baker (jr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Dan Kelley (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick), Andrew Williams (jr. Bensalem, PA/Father Judge) and Nick Giacopelli (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough).
Baker won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.96, which was a NCAA B Cut. Mark Anthony Spagnuolo (sr. West Orange, NJ/Bloomfield) followed in fifth place in 2:14.79. Kelley came in fifth place in the 100 freestyle (47:34) and Sam Spracklin (fr. Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) was seventh (48.12). Andrew Donachy (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) took fifth in the 200 backstroke (1:58.06), while Billy Swenson (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/St. Joseph) finished sixth (1:58.37). Kevin Wallace (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Reg.) came in seventh place in the 200 butterfly in 2:01.35.
In the three meter diving, Bryan Carlisle (so. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) was second with 515.70 points. Jeff Brinberg (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) took fourth with 500.05 points and Dave Bauer (so. Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) was seventh (359.20 points).
The women’s 400 free relay finished in fifth place with a time of 3:40.32. The relay was comprised of Janina Wojcik (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.), Christine DiRubbo (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Aileen Milde (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and Alicia Mackleer (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest.
Caitlin Ayres (sr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) came in second place in the 1650 freestyle in 18:09.86. She also took fifth place in the 200 butterfly (2:13.27). Carey Lafferty (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was third in the 1650 freestyle (18:14.23). Samantha King (fr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.92) and Meghan McCourt (fr. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was sixth (2:31.21). Stephanie McAllister (fr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) had a seventh place finish in the 200 backstroke in 2:29.92.
Saturday Results
The Rowan men were third in the 200 medley relay in 1:35.88. The relay members were Baker, Kevin Ovalle (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Wallace and Kelley. The men’s 800 freestyle relay’s time of 7:06.17 was good for third place. Baker, James Sheerin (jr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford), Giacopelli and Donachy were on the free relay.
Baker finished third in the 400 individual medley (4:13.34). In the 100 butterfly, Wallace and Kelley had fourth (52.87) and fifth (52.92) places respectively. Giacopelli came in fifth in the 200 free (1:44.51) while Sheerin was seventh (1:46.30). Spagnuolo took sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.83).
The Rowan women’s 200 medley relay took fourth place with a time of 1:51.81. The relay consisted of McAllister, McCourt, Wojcik and Mackleer. The women were third in the 800 freestyle relay (8:09.68) with Ashley Gagnon (fr. S. Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy), Milde, Lafferty and DiRubbo.
In the 400 individual medley, Gagnon came in sixth (4:53.42) and Laura Kuczynski (sr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) was ninth (4:59.03). Milde took eighth (2:02.37) in the 200 freestyle. Wojcik finished 10th in the 100 butterfly (1:01.42) followed by McAllister 11th (1:01.96). McCourt had a seventh place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.50) while King was eighth (1:10.13). McAllister was also ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:01.63).
Friday Results
The Rowan men’s 200 freestyle relay took third place in 1:26.06. The relay members were Spracklin, Kelley, Ovalle and Williams. The 400 medley relay was fourth with a time of 3:33.02. Chris Sykes (sr. Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Reg.), Baker, Wallace and Kelley made up the medley relay.
Brinberg won the one meter diving with 498.75 points. His team mates Carlisle and Dan Szymanski (fr. Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) finished third (424.75) and sixth (337.10) respectively.
In the 200 individual medley, Baker came in sixth with a time of 1:58.13. Kelley took third in the 50 freestyle (21.48) and Spracklin was seventh (21.82).
The Rowan women’s 200 freestyle relay finished in fourth place (1:38.90) with the team of Mackleer, Wojcik, DiRubbo and Milde. The 400 medley relay with McAllister, McCourt, Wojcik and Mackleer came in third (4:06.13).
In the 500 freestyle, Lafferty had a fourth place (5:15.23) and Ayres was sixth (5:19.00). King tied for fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:13.67). Mackleer was ninth in the 50 free (24.82) followed by Wojcik 10th (25.18).
