NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Rowan University completed its Virginia trip with an 11-6 win over Bridgewater College (VA) on Sunday.

The Profs have a 2-1 record, while the Eagles are 0-2. Rowan starter Robert Rose (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) allowed two earned runs and struck out three batters in 5.2 innings for the win. Reliever Gary Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) threw 2.1 innings with four strikeouts, while closer Tyler Dempsey (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) tossed one scoreless inning for his second save.

Second baseman Joe Franceschini (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) led the Profs with three hits in four at bats, three runs scored and two RBIs. First baseman Tom Ready (so. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) went three for five with two runs scored, one home run and one RBI. Catcher Robert Fox (jr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) had two hits (five at bats), two runs and one RBI. Outfielders Roger Turley (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and Tim Edmeads (sr. Newfield, NJ/Buena Reg.) each went two for four. Turley scored one run, while Edmeads had one RBI.

Rowan had two runs in the top of the second inning. Ready came home on an error and Franceschini singled in Fox. The Profs added five runs in the third inning for a 7-0 lead. Franceschini and Fox each had a RBI single and the other three runs were scored on errors. Designated hitter Frank Mullin (so. Westville, NJ/West Deptford) recorded a RBI double that brought home Franceschini in the top of the fifth inning. The Eagles finally got on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ready hit a solo home run in the sixth and Edmeads had a RBI double in the seventh. Bridgewater scored two runs in the seventh inning and one in the ninth, but Rowan held on for the victory.

Rowan travels to Alvernia College on Thursday, March 1 at 3 p.m.
