Rowan Wins NJAC South Division With 80-69 Victory Over Richard Stockton

GLASSBORO, NJ –Rowan University clinched the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) South Division with an 80-69 victory over Richard Stockton College on Saturday.

Rowan (20-5, NJAC 9-4) is the number one seed from the south and has a first round bye in the NJAC Championship Tournament. The Profs will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, February 21 at 7 p.m. Richard Stockton (17-8, NJAC 8-5) is the south’s second seed and will host the third seed from the north division, Rutgers-Newark on Monday, February 19 at 7 p.m.

Guard Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) led the Profs with 37 points. He made 15 of 27 field goals, one of five three-pointers and six of nine free throws. Guard Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) followed with 17 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Forward Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) added 13 points. He now has 1,440 career points moving him into fourth place on the school’s all-time list ahead of John Blazich (1,432 from 1967-71). Forward Dwayne Reevey (jr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) was also in double figures with 11 points. Reevey grabbed nine rebounds, while guard Dan Reddan (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) had seven. Bowser dished seven assists and Reevey had six.

For the Ospreys, guard Jerome Hubbard (so. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) totaled 17 points and six rebounds. Forward Jon Greene (jr. Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) compiled 16 points and a career-high 17 boards. Guard Mario Lancioni (jr. Runnemede, NJ/Triton) contributed 14 points and five assists.

Richard Stockton was ahead, 42-41 at halftime. In the second period, the score was tied three times, with the final one coming at 11:38 (51-51). Baker scored seven straight points for a 58-51 advantage at 9:21. The Ospreys came within three points (62-59) after a layup by Lancioni with 4:45 remaining. Rowan went back up by nine (68-59) after two free throws by Baker at 3:18. Richard Stockton forward Derrick Williams’ (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) at 2:23 made the score 70-63. Bowser connected on two foul shots (2:00) and Byrnes had a layup to give Rowan a 74-63 lead with 1:23 left to play. The closest Richad Stockton would come was seven points (76-69) with 28 seconds on the clock. Baker made a layup (00:19) and a dunk (00:08) to close out the game.

In the first half, the score was tied 10-10 at 15:31. Rowan went on a 15-2 run over next four minutes for a 25-12 advantage at 11:42. Bowser had eight of the Profs’ points in the stretch. Byrnes’ layup at 10:32 put Rowan up 27-15. Lancioni made two free throws at 9:15 to bring the Ospreys within seven points (29-22). Richard Stockton trailed by three points (35-32) after a jumper by Lancioni at 4:44.
Rowan went back up by seven points (39-32) following a jumper by Bowser (4:29) and a layup by Baker (3:58). The Ospreys ended the half with a 10-2 run for a 42-41 lead at intermission. Greene had eight points in the stretch. Baker led all first half scorers with 16 points. Bowser followed with 10 points and Reevey recorded six assists. Greene, Lancioni and Hubbard had 10 points apiece for Richard Stockton.
