NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Right fielder Tim Edmeads recorded three RBIs in Rowan University’s 6-4 win over host Christopher Newport University.

Edmeads (sr. Newfield, NJ/Buena Reg.) had two hits including a double. Left fielder Frank Hasenauer (jr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy), center fielder Keith Evans (fr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) and shortstop Tim Barnshaw (so. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) each totaled two hits. Barnshaw also had two RBIs while second baseman Joe Franeschini (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had one. Evans scored three runs and stole three bases.

Starter Joe Cichy (jr. Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) pitched six innings for the win on the mound. Cichy struck out seven and only gave up one walk. Reliever Brian McLaughlin (sr. Glendora, NJ/Triton Reg.) went two innings and closer Tyler Dempsey (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) pitched one. They both did not allow a hit or a run.

Rowan improves to 1-1 on the season. It was the first loss for Christopher Newport with a 5-1 mark.

The Captains had a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Rowan scored four runs in the top of the third. Franceschini singled in the first run and Edmeads doubled in three. The Profs added one run in the fourth on Barnshaw’s RBI single. The Captains’ scored their second run in the fifth. Rowan’s scoring ended with one run in the sixth while Christopher Newport had two in the bottom half. Barnshaw drove in Evans with a single to right center field.

Rowan ends its three-day Virginia trip on Sunday, February 18 against Bridgewater College at 11 a.m. The game will be played at Christopher Newport University.
