GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated The College of New Jersey, 81-61 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action on Saturday.
The victory gives the Profs a season sweep over the Lions. Rowan won the first game at TCNJ, 68-59. Rowan’s fifth consecutive win improves its record to 18-5 overall and 7-4 in the NJAC. TCNJ is 11-13 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
Rowan guard Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) led all scorers with 28 points. Baker made 12 of 18 field goals and four of six free throws. Guard Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) had 12 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Forward Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) grabbed a career high 14 rebounds.
TCNJ forward Mark Aziz (jr. Hackettstown, NJ/West Morris) had 22 points and four rebounds. Guard Drew Rosenfeld (jr. Haddonfield, NJ/Camden Catholic) added seven points and three assists. Guard Jay Frank (fr. Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) and forward Matt Bramley (fr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) contributed with six points each.
In the first half, Rowan jumped out to a 21-7 lead at 10:16 that was spurred by a 15-0 run. Baker had five points over the stretch and Bowser had four. The teams traded baskets until layups by guard Aaron Spellman (so. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) and forward Rahim Shiver (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) extended the Profs’ advantage to 16 points (29-13) with 6:16 remaining in the half. TCNJ responded with a 14-3 run over the next 4:20 to cut the deficit to five (32-27). Aziz had 10 of the 14 points for TCNJ. Rowan answered with eight straight points to end the half, capped by a three-point play by Dwayne Reevey (jr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven), to take a 40-27 lead into halftime.
Rowan carried its momentum into the second half, building its lead to 25 points (63-38) over the first 9:54. Baker scored 11 of the 23 points. TCNJ cut the deficit to 21 points (65-44) after two free throws from Aziz at 8:43. Rowan was too much, responding with an 11-2 run for its biggest lead of the game, 76-46 at 4:02. TCNJ ended the game with seven straight points to bring the score to 81-61.
Rowan continues its conference schedule on the road against Kean University on Wednesday, February 14 at 8 p.m.
