GLASSBORO, NJ – The Widener University men’s basketball team defeated Valley Forge Christian College, 92-82 in the consolation game of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Widener improves to 9-1 for the season, while Valley Forge Christian is 10-3. Forward Matt Sonsa led the scoring for the Pride with 18 points. He was followed by Charles Jones with 17 points and six assists. Jones was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Guards Bobby Edmunds and Nyere Miller contributed with 12 points apiece. Edmunds dished six assists and Sosna recorded eight rebounds.
For the Patriots, guard Kevin Wilson had a game-high 24 points. He was chosen to the All-Tournament Team. Guard Justyn Mitchell scored 18 points and had three steals. Guards Michael Stayne and James Fulton added 14 and 12 points respectively.
Widener began the second half with a 46-32 lead. The Pride opened the stanza with a 19-7 scoring spurt to go up 65-39 at 14:35. Jones had 11 of the 19 points. Valley Forge Christian narrowed the deficit to 14 points (73-59) with 7:21 left. Widener went back up by 17 (86-69) after a layup by Sosna at 2:30. The Patriots came as close as 10 points with 22 and seven seconds remaining, but the Pride held on.
In the first period, Widener built up a 12 point lead over the first 9:37. Valley Forge Christian pulled within eight points (34-26) following two free throws by Mitchell at 5:04. The Pride closed out the half by outscoring the Patriots 12-6 for a 46-32 advantage. Miller was the top scorer in the first stanza with 10 points. Forward Jamarr Johnson, Sosna and Jones added six points apiece. For Valley Forge Christian, Fulton had nine points, while Wilson chipped in with seven.
