ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The Elizabethtown College women’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 65-54 in the championship of the Blue Jay Classic on Saturday.
In the first round on Friday, host Elizabethtown defeated Trinity (CT), 75-41 while Rowan won 76-37 over Penn State Harrisburg. Trinity had a 76-54 victory against Penn State Harrisburg in the consolation game.
The Blue Jays were led by forward Amanda Reid with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Reid was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Guard Megan Quinn totaled 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Guard Erin Walton was also in double figures with 10 points. Walton was a member of the All-Tournament team along with Rowan guards Brynn DeGroff (jr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) and Kristina Wallace (sr. Logan Twp., NJ/Kingsway Reg.).
Elizabethtown is 5-2 overall while Rowan has a 4-3 record. DeGroff scored 11 points, grabbed six boards and recorded six steals. Wallace dished eight assists. Forward Amanda Jennings (so. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) and guard Michelle Lala (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) each contributed with six rebounds.
The first half ended with the Blue Jays ahead by one-point (36-35). Elizabethtown started the final period with 10 straight points to lead 46-35 at 14:39. Walton contributed with six points in the run. With 7:04 remaining, the Blue Jays were ahead by 14 points (56-42) after a jumper by guard Ashley Toczylowski. The Profs pulled within nine points (58-49) at 4:23 with Jenning’s basket. It was the closest Rowan came for the remainder of the game. Guard Megan Romano made a layup that put Elizabethtown back up by 14 points (64-50) with 2:23 left. Forward Kaity Snyder, Walston and Romano had six points apiece in the second half.
In the first period, the Blue Jays went up by seven points (13-6) in the first 6:48 of the game. Reid and Quinn each had four points in the run, Romano added three and center Audrey Hitz made two. The Profs trailed by one-point (19-18) after DeGroff’s three-pointer at 8:17. With 1:45 remaining, Elizabethtown led 36-29. Rowan ended the half with two three-pointers, one by guard Danielle Rohe (so. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) at 1:38 and one by DeGroff at 0:36.
Rowan is back at home on Tuesday, December 11 against York College (PA) at 7 p.m.
