GLASSBORO, NJ – Five players scored in double figures to lead the Widener University women’s basketball team over host Rowan University, 84-73 in a nonconference game on Saturday.

Guard Beth Dessart Mager led the Pride with 19 points and seven rebounds. Forwards Barbara Fleming and Rayne Reber and center Becky Tyler each contributed with 14 points. Tyler grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and guard Megan Sipple added 10 points.

Widener improves to 6-3 on the season while Rowan is 5-4 overall. For the Profs, forward Ashley Cieplicki (jr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) totaled 16 points. Guards Kristina Wallace (sr. Logan Twp., NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and Michelle Lala (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) scored 12 points apiece. Wallace also dished nine assists.

In the second half, Rowan tied the score at 41 on a three-pointer by guard Nicole Perrini (sr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) with 16:51 remaining. The Profs were ahead by six points (47-41) when guard Brynn DeGroff (jr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) made a layup. At 11:52, Rowan was up 52-47. Widener scored five straight points and Reber’s layup at 10:17 tied the score at 52. Her foul shot gave the Pride the lead that they held for the remainder of the game. Widener then had a 10-2 run to lead 63-54 at 8:02. Fleming and Reber each had a three-pointer.

The Prides’ biggest lead was 11 points (71-60) after two free throws by Tyler at 5:15. The closest the Profs came was seven points, the last time (78-71) with 1:54 left. Reber and Tyler each scored 14 points in the final period. Rowan had 10 points by Cieplicki.

The first half ended with Rowan on top by one point, 30-29. Wallace’s foul shot at 2:39 put Rowan up 26-24. Dessart Mager made a three that gave Widener a one-point advantage (27-26) with 2:20 on the clock. Wallace had a jumper (2:06) and Lala followed with a layup (1:31) to lead by three (30-27). Fleming cut the deficit to one with a layup at the 43 second mark. Dessart Mager compiled 15 first half points.

Rowan is home again on Friday, December 21 against Chestnut Hill College at 6 p.m.
