GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – Forward Matt Byrnes scored 28 points to lead Rowan University to a 75-65 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College on Monday.

Byrnes (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made 10 of 16 field goals, five of eight three-pointers and three of five free throws. He also pulled down nine rebounds and dished five assists. Guard Billy Care (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) added 14 points, while guard Kevin Darby (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) posted 11 points and seven rebounds. Forward Rahim Shiver (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) contributed with eight points and forward Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) grabbed seven boards.

For Gwynedd-Mercy (6-2), guard Lemeire Talley and forward Dave Smith recorded 14 points apiece. Smith added nine boards and guard Colin Fitzgerald had seven assists. Forward Haven Wroten posted 13 points and seven rebounds.

Gwynedd-Mercy led 38-37 at the intermission. In the second period, Wroten’s layup at 18:52 put the Griffins up by three (42-39). Six straight points by Shiver gave Rowan a three point advantage (45-42) at 15:08. The Profs were ahead by one (47-46) at 13:06. Rowan went on a 9-2 run over the next 3:54 to make the score 56-48. Darby scored six points in the stretch, while Care had three. The closest Gwynedd-Mercy came was four points (62-58) with 5:31 remaining. The Profs largest lead of 15 points (74-59) came with 28 seconds left following a layup by Byrnes.

In the first half, Gwynedd-Mercy went up 24-11 over the first 7:27. Talley had 11 of the 24 points. Wroten’s layup at 7:04 gave the Griffins a 16 point advantage (34-18). Rowan went on a 19-3 surge to close out the period. Byrnes recorded 13 of the 19 points, including three three-pointers.

Byrnes paced the Profs with 20 points and five rebounds at the half. Care added seven points. Smith totaled 10 points and six boards for the Griffins. Talley and Wroten each scored eight points.
