JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team started its conference schedule with a 70-67 win at New Jersey City University on Saturday night.
Guard Danielle Rohe (so. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) hit a three-pointer that put the Profs up 68-66 with 1:16 left in the game. At the 59 second mark, guard Angela Fitzgerald (fr. Jersey City, NJ/Marist) made the second of two foul shots to pull the Gothic Knights within one. Guard Kristina Wallace (sr. Logan Twp., NJ/Kingsway Reg.) sealed the victory with two free throws with four seconds left. Rowan improves to 3-1 overall while New Jersey City drops to 1-5.
Forward Jillian Kane (so. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) led the Profs with career-highs of 21 points and seven rebounds. Forward Jessica Nimbley (so. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) contributed with 15 points and six boards. Forward Ashley Cieplicki (jr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) was in double figures with 12 points. Wallace totaled six assists and guard Stephanie Cochran (so. Budd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive) had four.
For NJCU, Fitzgerald scored a game-high 24 points. Guard Carolina Gracia (so. Plainfield, NJ/Franklin) and guard Tania Greenleaf (so. Bordentown, NJ/Columbia) added 15 and 13 points
respectively. Forward Alaia Robinson (jr. Irvington, NJ/Irvington) pulled down a game-high 15 boards and forward Natashia Clackley (sr. Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) followed with 12.
In the second half, Kane hit a jumper that tied the score at 45 with 13:11 remaining. NJCU scored six straight points to lead 51-45 at 11:20. Garcia made two straight baskets and Fitzgerald was good for two foul shots. The Profs trailed by two (57-55) at 6:56 after Nimbley’s basket and free throw. Fitzgerald put NJCU back up by six (61-55) with a layup at 6:05. With 2:01 left, the Gothic Knights were ahead 66-63 after Fitzgerald’s foul shot. Nimbley made a layup at 1:56 before Rohe’s go-ahead three.
Kane and Nimbley each scored 11 points in the final period. NJCU was led by Fitzgerald with 11 points and Garcia with 10.
The first half ended with Rowan up by four points, 36-32. The score was tied twice with the last one at 8:55 (16-16). Kane nailed a three-pointer tying that tied the score. Rohe followed with a layup and NJCU took back the lead (19-18) with a three by Greenleaf with 8:04 on the clock. The Profs answered with a 9-1 run for a seven point advantage (27-20) with 5:13 remaining. Rowan led by nine points (36-27) at the one minute mark on guard Gina Catanzariti’s (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) layup. NJCU came back with five straight points to end the period. Fitzgerald had four of the five points.
Guard Michelle Vasquez (so. Harrison, NJ/Harrison) led the Gothic Knights with 13 points in the first half. Rowan had 10 points from Kane.
Rowan is on the road again at Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday, December 4 at 6 p.m.
