Cheafsky's Goal in OT Lifts Rowan over Kean, 4-3

GLASSBORO, NJ – With one second remaining in overtime, forward Rachel Cheafsky recorded the game-winning goal to give Rowan University a 4-3 victory over Kean University in its final New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Cheafsky (sr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) took a direct shot through a crowded goal crease and found the back of the net. Rowan back Kacey Ehret (so. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) scored off a rebound to tie the game with 2:41 left in the second half to send the game into overtime. Forward Susan Massara’s (sr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) goal at 56:12 brought the Profs within one (3-2). Kean midfielder Kelly Mataya (fr. West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley) gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead with a penalty stroke at 46:32.

Kean was ahead 2-1 at the intermission. Forward Brandee Brown (fr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) started the scoring for Kean with a goal into the left corner of the net at 26:11. Rowan forward Danielle Miranda (sr. Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) responded scoring off of a rebound 4:42 minutes later. At 32:09, Kean forward Stephanie Cirino (jr. Warminster, PA/William Tennent) deflected the ball high into the net with an assist from Katie McGee (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.).

The Profs out shot the Cougars 26-8. Rowan goalkeeper Amanda Cucinotti (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) totaled three saves. Kean goalie Jenni Barry (so. Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) tallied ten stops.

Rowan will have to wait until Sunday, November 4 to find out if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship tournament. The Profs finish the regular season 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the NJAC. Kean has a 10-6 overall record and a 2-4 conference mark.
