GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Arcadia University, 74-69 in a non-conference game on Monday night.
Rowan improves to 3-0, while Arcadia has a 1-1 record. The Profs were led by forward Matt Byrnes (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) with 13 points and eight rebounds. Guard Billy Care (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) added 11 points. Forwards Rahim Shiver (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) and Brian DeShields (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) and guard Michael Farrow (fr. Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) scored nine points apiece. Shiver also pulled down eight boards.
For the Knights, guard Eric Elliot (sr. Evansville, IN/Steinert) had a game-high 19 points. Forward Bobby Mulholland (jr. Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) contributed with 17 points and guard Blaise Pepitone (jr. Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) added 13. Guard Sterling Green (sr. Indianapolis, IN/Burlington Twp.) chipped in with nine points and six rebounds.
Rowan was ahead 38-27 at halftime. In the second period, the Profs had a 15 point advantage (47-32) after two free throws by guard Dan Cappelluti (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) at 15:53. The Knights scored the next nine points to make the score 47-41 with 13:31 left to play. Green had five points, Elliot had three and Mulholland added one. DeShield’s layup at 12:08 put Rowan back up by 11 (54-43). Green nailed a three-pointer at 9:20 to bring Arcadia within four (56-52). Farrow’s two free throws at 6:42 increased the lead to eight (62-54). The Knights came within three points (62-59) after a jumper by Elliot at 4:44. Rowan made eight of 10 foul shots down the stretch to hold on.
In the first stanza, Rowan started the game with an 11-2 run over the first 5:27. Forward Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) scored four points, guard Kevin Darby (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) had three and Byrnes and Care each added two. Pepitone’s three-pointer at 9:28 cut the lead to four points (18-14). The Profs closed out the half with two three-pointers by Byrnes for an 11 point advantage (38-27).
Byrnes led all players with 11 first half points and Reevey followed with eight. For Arcadia, Pepitone had 10 points, while Elliot pulled down five boards.
Rowan travels to New Jersey City University for its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener on Saturday, December 1 at 8 p.m.
