ANNVILLE, PA – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated York College (NY), 74-63 to win the championship of the Rinso Marquette Tournament.
Rowan improves to 2-0, while York has a 1-1 record. It was Rowan’s second Rinso Marquette Tournament Title, with the first one coming in 1995-96. Earlier in the day, SUNY Brockport had an 85-78 victory over host Lebanon Valley College in the consolation game. In the first round on Saturday, Rowan beat SUNY Brockport, 97-93 and York posted a 57-56 win over Lebanon Valley.
Profs’ forward Matt Byrnes (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was selected the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Joining him on the All-Tournament Team was Rowan guard Kevin Darby (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton).
The Profs had four players that scored in double figures. Darby led the way with a career-high 18 points, followed by guard Michael Farrow (fr. Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) with 15. Guard Billy Care (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and Byrnes each scored 13 points. Forward Rahim Shiver (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) and Darby pulled down seven rebounds apiece. Guard Dan Cappelluti (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and Byrnes each dished four assists.
For the Cardinals, guard Michael Salamanca (sr. Hollis, NY/Cardozo) had 16 points and six boards. Forward Chris Roberts (sr. Jamaica, NY/Springfield Gardens) added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Forward Omari Phipps (fr. Laurelton, NY/St. Johns Prep) contributed with 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.
The game was tied (10-10) following two free throws by Care at 15:10 in the first half. York went on a 10-2 run to lead 20-12 at 12:02. Forward Rodney Bennett (fr. Corona, NY/Chaparral) and Salamanca each made a three-pointer, while Phipps and Roberts each added a layup. Rowan cut the deficit to one (20-19) after a three by Byrnes at 10:14. Farrow’s jumper at 7:10 tied the game at 24. The Profs closed out the half with a 16-2 stretch for a 40-26 halftime advantage. Darby scored 10 points in the run.
At the intermission, Darby led all scorers with 14 points. Farrow contributed with seven points and Care had six. For York, Salamanca posted eight points and four rebounds, while guard Jonathan Winns (so. Elmhurst, NY/Newtown) had five points.
In the second period, Rowan had its biggest lead of the game, 19 points (47-28) after two free throws by Care. Rowan was ahead 49-31 with 17 minutes remaining. York fought back with a 14-3 run to trail by seven (52-45) at 12:59. Roberts scored six points in the surge, while Salamanca and Bennett each had a three-pointer. Byrnes made four straight free throws following a technical foul to put the Profs up by 13 (58-45) at 11:26. The closest the Cardinals would come was seven points (59-52) with 9:11 left to play. Rowan broke the game open with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes for a 69-54 advantage. Farrow had six points and Darby added four.
Rowan plays Arcadia University in its home opener on Monday, November 26 at 8 p.m.
