MADISON, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team defeated host Drew University, 70-68 in the championship of the Rose City Classic on Sunday.
Guard Brynn DeGroff (jr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) led the Profs with 16 points and seven rebounds. DeGroff was selected the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. She scored 11 points and recorded seven steals against John Jay in the first game. Rowan rolled over John Jay College, 89-25 in the opening round while Drew defeated Newbury College, 73-36.
Guard Jillian Kane (so. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) contributed with 14 points while forward Jessica Nimbley (so. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) and guard Gina Catanzariti (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) each added 11 points. Nimbley was named to the All-Tournament team. Kane also grabbed six rebounds. Catanzariti and Nimbley totaled four steals apiece.
For Drew (1-1), guard Alison Hartnett (sr. Dobbs Ferry, NY/Dobbs Ferry) scored a game-high 20 points. Forwards Jessica Reid (fr. Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) and Laura Methvin (jr. Newark, DE/Charter School) had 12 and 10 points respectively. Methvin also pulled down a game-high 14 boards.
After trailing at the half (39-31), Rowan came back to out score Drew, 39-29 in the final stanza. At 18:04, the Rangers were ahead by 10 points (43-33). The Profs scored 10 straight points to tie the score at 43. Guard Kristina Wallace’s (sr. Logan Twp., NJ/Kingsway Reg.) foul shot tied it at 14:38. The score was tied three more times before Rowan took the lead for good. The last tie at 53 came when Harnett made a free throw with 8:10 left in the game. Rowan was up by seven points (67-60) on Kane’s three-pointer at 5:18. Drew pulled within three points (69-66) when guard Ashley Logan (fr. Westwood, MA/Westwood) nailed two foul shots (2:08). Reid added a layup with 1:19 left for the final score.
In the first period, Drew was ahead by 15 points (23-8) with 10:10 remaining. The Profs’ come back started with an 8-2 run that made the score 25-16 at 6:38. DeGroff and Catanariti each had three points while forward Amanda Jennings (so. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) added two. The Rangers were up by 13 points (35-22) with a layup by Methvin at 2:45. Rowan answered with a 9-4 run to end the half. DeGroff hit two threes while Kane had one.
Rowan (2-0) hosts St. Mary’s College (MD) in its home opener on Monday, November 26 at 6 p.m.
