MADISON, NJ – Five players scored in double figures to lead Rowan University over John Jay College, 89-25 in the first round of the Rose City Classic.
Rowan (1-0) will play host Drew University (1-0) in the championship on Sunday at 3 p.m. In the first round, Drew defeated Newbury College, 73-36. John Jay meets Newbury in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
Guards Nicole Perrini (sr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills), Brynn DeGroff (jr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) and Jillian Kane (so. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield) and forward Ashley Cieplicki (jr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) each contributed with 11 points. Forward Amanda Jennings (so. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) added 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Guard Kristina Wallace (sr. Logan Twp., NJ/Clearview Reg.) had four assists.
For John Jay (0-1), guard Dominique Grice totaled a game-high 14 points while forward Parker Griffin pulled down a game-high 11 boards. The Profs out rebounded the Bloodhounds, 34-29.
The first half ended with Rowan ahead 41-8. The Profs broke the school record (10) for fewest points allowed in a half. In the first five minutes, Rowan had an 11 point lead (13-2). Wallace scored six points, Cieplicki followed with five and DeGroff had two. Grice’s jumper at 13:01 pulled John Jay within seven points (13-6). The Profs pulled away with 15 unanswered points to lead 28-6 with 4:41 left. Guard Gina Catanzariti (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Cieplicki and Kane each scored four points in the surge. Cieplicki and Kane finished the first period with nine points apiece.
In the final stanza, Perrini and Jennings led the Profs with nine points apiece. Forward Kaitlin Guy (jr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) had five points and four rebounds in the second half.
