Field Hockey Falls to Bowdoin, 5-0 in NCAA Third Round

BRUNSWICK, ME – Forward Lindsay McNamara scored four goals to lead Bowdoin College over Rowan University, 5-0 in the third round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Sunday.

Bowdoin will play Lebanon Valley College in the semifinals while Middlebury College faces Salisbury University. The semifinals and final will be held on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17 at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA.

The Polar Bears are undefeated with an 18-0 record. Bowdoin is ranked first in the final National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll and is the only undefeated team in Division III. It is Bowdoin’s third straight trip to the national semifinals.

McNamara, the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Year, started the scoring at 2:17. She knocked in a loose ball in front of the net after a penalty corner. Midfielder Kate Gormley made it 2-0 at the half with a goal at 33:19 and McNamara had the assist.

McNamara then scored three straight in the final period. Her second goal came at 43:51 when she redirected a shot by midfielder Julia King. McNamara tipped in the next goal (49:42) on a shot by midfielder Ingrid Oelschlager. The fifth goal was a penalty stroke (57:51) by McNamara. She has 23 goals on the season.

The Polar Bears totaled 15 shots while the Profs had four. Goalie Emileigh Mercer
made two stops for her eighth shutout. Rowan goalie Amanda Cucinotti (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) had four saves.

Rowan defeated SUNY Cortland, 2-0 in the second round (Nov. 10). The Profs end the season with a 15-5 record. This was Rowan’s 15th appearance and third straight in the national tournament.
