WCSU Defeats Rowan, 2-0 in NCAA First Round

DANBURY, CT – The Western Connecticut State University women’s soccer team defeated Rowan University, 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Saturday.

On Sunday in the second round, WCSU (18-2-1) will play the winner of the first round game between Endicott College (16-5) and SUNY Oneonta (17-3-1) at 1 p.m. The second round winner advances to the sectionals of the national tournament next weekend.

The Colonials scored one goal in each half. Forward Kim Crayco (sr. Bolton, CT/Bolton) scored the first one at the 17 minute mark. Crayco had a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off a Prof player. It was Crayco’s 13th goal of the season.

Midfielder Jessica Sperlazza (sr. Wallingford, CT/Lyman Hall) added an insurance goal with 8:31 left in the game. Western Connecticut out shot Rowan, 25-11. Goalie Jenna Cappellieri (sr. Stratford, CT/Masuk) made four saves for her 10th shutout. In the Profs’ net, goalkeeper Melissa Hall (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) stopped 12 shots.

Rowan ends the season with a 14-5 record. It was the Profs’ fourth appearance and third straight in the NCAA tournament.
