MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Montclair State University men’s soccer team won 2-0 over Rowan University in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament on Wednesday night.
Montclair State, the second seed, will play at number one New Jersey City University on Saturday, November 3 in the championship. The NJAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. NJCU shut out Ramapo College, 3-0 in the semifinals.
The Red Hawks scored one goal in each half. Forward Tyler Masterson (jr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) had the first one at 32:03 with an assist from midfielder Chris Edelschein (fr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee). It was Masterson’s 12th goal on the season. Edelschein scored the second goal at 68:54. Edelschein headed in a pass by midfielder Owen Nichols (sr. Princeton, NJ/Princeton).
MSU (16-2-1) out shot Rowan, 14-3. Goalie Nick Mele (jr. Delran, NJ/Delran) made one save for his 11th shutout this year. For the Profs, goalie Kevin Nuss (sr. Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) stopped three shots.
Rowan was the sixth seed in the conference tournament. In the first round (Oct. 27), Rowan defeated the third seed The College of New Jersey, 1-0. The Profs finish the season with a 12-8-1 record.
