WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the season with a sweep over William Paterson University on Thursday night. The Prof men defeated the Pioneers, 141-97 and the women had a 131-99 victory.

Rowan won the men’s 200 medley (1:41.81) and 200 freestyle (1:31.68) relays. Kevin Baker (sr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Kevin Ovalle (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Stephen Tucker (so. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) and Jim Smith (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) were on the medley relay. The freestyle team included Dan Kelley (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick), David Shinton (sr. Newark, ED/Newark), Tucker and Smith.

In the 50 freestyle, Ovalle had a winning time of 22.87 and Smith followed in second place (23.13). Andrew Williams (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) came in first in the 200 individual medley (2:06.22) and Jeremy Soto (so. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) was second (2:08.60) Mike Brooks (fr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) had a second place in the 1,000 freestyle (10:56.31). Baker finished second in the 200 free (1:48.88) while Kelley was third (1:55.13).

In the diving, Bryan Carlisle (jr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) won the one meter with 264.68 points. He also took first in the three meter with 319.95 points. Rookie Mark Balesteri. (fr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) had second places in the one (235.42) and three (221.55) meter diving. Nate McCarson (jr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) finished third on the three meter board (186.98).

Kelley swam a winning time of 50.91 in the 100 freestyle and Chris Mahoney (fr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) took second (51.70). In the 100 backstroke, Billy Swenson (jr. Scotch Plains, NJ/St. Joseph (Metuchen)) was first (57.18), Soto second (58.83) and Brian McDermott (fr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) third (1:01.46). Shinton came in second in the 100 butterfly (56.57) and Tucker was third (56.96). James Sheerin (sr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) and Williams finished second (5:11.69) and third (5:16.25) respectively in the 500 freestyle.

The Profs took first place in the women’s 200 medley relay (1:51.48) with Kate Winters (fr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Stacey Rahter (fr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Janina Wojcik (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) and Alicia Mackleer (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest). The team of Wojcik, Stephanie McAllister (so. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Samantha King (so. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) and Christine DiRubbo (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had a winning time of 1:46.60 in the 200 freestyle relay.

In the 1,000 freestyle, Julianne Furdyna (fr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was the winner in 11:27.65 and Becky Goldberg (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) came in second (11:49.61). Rowan took first, second and third in the 200 freestyle with King (2:03.53), Winters (2:03.86) and Ashley Gagnon (so. S. Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) (2:10.80). Mackleer had a winning time of 25.31 in the 50 freestyle. In the 200 individual medley, Rahter and King were first (2:18.28) and second (2:20.72) respectively.

McAllister finished first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.00 and Mackleer took second in 1:05.46. DiRubbo won the 100 freestyle in 56.87 and Wojcik had a first place in the 100 butterfly (1:03.14). In the 100 butterfly, Anne O’Gorman (fr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) was second (1:04.23) and Milde took third (1:06.55). Lauren Hauser (so. Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) had a second place in the one meter diving with 138.97 points.

The Rowan swim teams host Salisbury University in the home opener on Tuesday, October 30 at 6 p.m.
