GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team won 3-2 over Neumann College on Monday night. The win marked head coach Dan Gilmore’s 500th career victory.
In his 32nd season, Gilmore has compiled a 500-131-46 won-loss record at the University. He is only the eighth men’s soccer coach in the history of the NCAA to reach 500 wins. Gilmore guided the men’s soccer team to the NCAA Division III National Championship in 1981 and 1990. Rowan finished second at the national tournament in 1979 and 2000 and third in 1980, 1985 and 1998.
The Profs have made 24 appearances in the NCAA tournament under Gilmore and captured 13 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) titles. Nine times he has been selected the NJAC Coach of the Year.
Forward Dwayne Reevey (sr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) led the Profs with two goals and midfielder Peter Malkmus (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) had one. Reevey also had one assist. Both of Neumann’s goals came on penalty kicks by midfielder Zach Seil (fr. Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakfield) and forward Jesse Urquhart (jr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek).
Rowan (10-5-1) started the game with three straight goals. Reevey had his first one at 9:18 with assists from midfielder Michael Pascale (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) and midfielder Dan Arnold (so. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep). Nine minutes later, Malkmus hit the net on a feed from forward Sean Goldsworthy (sr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and Reevey. The third goal was a header by Reevey on a cross from Pascale at 24:26. Seil recorded the first penalty kick at 26:07 on a trip in the box.
In the second period, Neumann (6-5-3) was awarded a second penalty kick again on a trip in the box. Urquhart’s penalty kick came at 61:01. The Profs and the Knights each finished the game with 10 shots. For Neumann, goalie Zack Ratliff (so. Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) made three saves. Goakeeper Charles Cunliffe (fr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) was in the Profs’ net the first half and he had three saves. Dave Schindewolf (fr. Robbinsville, NJ/Lawrence) was in goal for the last 45 minutes and he stopped three shots.
Rowan travels to New York University on Wednesday, October 17 for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
