NEWARK, NJ – Midfielder Krista Verzi scored one goal and assisted on two in Rowan University’s 3-1 conference win at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday evening.
Rowan is 12-2 on the season and 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rutgers-Newark has an overall record of 4-9-1 and a 1-5-1 conference mark.
All of the scoring came in the second half. Forward Michelle Carrocino (fr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) started the scoring at 54:47. Carrocino hit the net for her 19th goal of the season on a pass from Verzi (so. Delran, NJ/Delran). At 72:16, Verzi had the second goal with a shot from 30 yards and forward Dana Ross (fr. Delran, NJ/Delran) assisted. Verzi had a feed to midfielder Emilie Wilson (jr. Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) who scored on a breakaway at 76:41.
Midfielder Tanya Groszew (so. Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) spoiled the shutout, scoring on a penalty kick with 2:42 remaining. Rowan out shot Rutgers-Newark, 21-8. In the Profs’ net, goalie Sarah Volkomer (so. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) made three saves. For the Scarlet Raiders, goalkeeper Katie Hastings (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) stopped 13 shots.
Next week, Rowan hosts Kean University on Saturday, October 20 in a 1 p.m. conference game.
