GLASSBORO, NJ – Quarterback Tim Hagerty threw three touchdowns and rushed for two more in Rowan University’s 48-27 victory over Buffalo State College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
Hagerty (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) led the Profs with 149 yards passing on 13 completions in 21 attempts. Superbacks Ulysses Encarnacion (sr. Little Ferry, NJ/Ridgefield Park) and Rob Richardson (sr. Hackensack, NJ/Garfield) rushed for 124 and 101 yards respectively. Encarnacion added a touchdown on the ground. Wide receivers Val Terebizh (so. Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee), Billy Magill (fr. Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) and Mark Lisa (fr. Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon Twp.) had one touchdown reception apiece.
Defensive back Lafayette Crawford (fr. Laurel Springs, NJ/Highland Reg.) had a team-high eight tackles. Linebacker Matthew Bailey (so. Pittsgrove, NJ/Schalick) made seven stops, including 1.5 tackles for a loss (-4 yards). Linebackers Andrew Yezzi (so. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and Kevin Taylor (so. Westwood, NJ/Westwood Reg.) each recorded six stops. Defensive end Justin Hinds (jr. Port Reading, NJ/Woodridge) forced one fumble and defensive back Chris Pollard (jr. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson)blocked two punts.
For the Bengals, quarterback Dan Aquilio (sr. Depew, NY/Depew) completed 15 of 36 pass attempts for 216 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Greg Meyer (jr. Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) made three catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Wideout Jarrett Smith (jr. Beacon, NY/Beacon) had three grabs for 70 yards and one TD. Running back Sammy Smith (so. Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) carried the ball 11 times for 45 yards.
Defensive back Scott Forster (sr. E. Otto, NY/Catt.-Little Valley) posted a game-high 16 tackles and one interception. Linebacker Matt Pacana (jr. N. Tonawanda, NY/N. Tonawanda) recorded 10 stops and one sack (-6 yards). Defensive back Peter Nguyen (sr. Buffalo, NY/South Park) and defensive tackle Ron Webber (sr. Middle Island, NY/William Floyd) each had seven tackles. Nguyen also had one pick.
Rowan went ahead 7-0 at 8:41 in the first quarter when Hagerty connected with Magill on a seven yard touchdown pass. Hagerty completed three passes in the drive for 29 yards. Aquilio threw a 37 yard TD pass to Meyer, but the PAT attempt failed making the score 7-6 at 6:02. Aquilio had three completions for 33 yards prior to the TD. In the second stanza, Terebizh caught a 37 yard touchdown pass from Hagerty to give the Profs a 13-6 advantage at 14:08, following a blocked extra point attempt. Hagerty’s 12 yard run setup the touchdown.
Just under seven minutes later, Hagerty carried the ball into the end zone from one yard out. Cornerback Cordel High (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) recovered a fumble on the Buffalo State 35 yard line to start the scoring drive. Hagerty completed a 15 yard pass to Lisa with 1:21 remaining in the half to put Rowan up 27-6 at the half. Pollard’s first blocked punt started the Profs’ touchdown drive on the Bengals’ 29 yard line.
In the third period, Encarnacion broke free on an 11 yard touchdown scamper at 12:24. The Bengals answered with a 36 yard touchdown catch by Meyer at 8:47. Aquilio’s 25 yard completion to Jarrett Smith made way for the TD. Hagerty had his second touchdown run, from three yards out to put the Profs ahead 34-13 at 1:59. Richardson carried the ball four times for 28 yards before Rowan scored. Buffalo State added a 41 yard touchdown reception from Jarrett Smith at 11:49 in the fourth quarter. Backup quarterback Joe Rankin (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) had a 15 yard touchdown rush to give Rowan a 48-20 advantage with 3:26 left to play. Wide receiver Adam Preciado (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and Encarnacion accounted for 64 yards on the ground in the drive. Buffalo State backup quarterback Jeremy Mountain (fr. Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) carried the ball five yards for a touchdown with 31 seconds remaining to end the scoring. Sammy Smith’s 17 yard run setup the TD.
With the win, Rowan improves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Buffalo State has a 2-4 overall record and a 1-3 NJAC mark. Rowan travels to NJAC opponent Kean University on Saturday, October 20 for a 2 p.m. game. Buffalo State hosts William Paterson University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
