LYCOMING, PA – The Rowan University women’s basketball team won the consolation game, 63-58 over host Lycoming College in the Hoops for Hounds Tournament.
The Profs (7-5) were led by forward Ashley Cieplicki (so. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Guard Brynn DeGroff (so. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) scored 11 points and recorded five steals. Guard Kristina Wallace (jr. Logan Twp., NJ/Clearview Reg.) dished eight assists. DeGroff was named to the All-Tournament Team.
For Lycoming (5-7), forward Rebecca Leid (fr. Denver, PA/Cocalico) contributed with 12 points and five boards. Guard Jessica Zerbee (fr. Duncasnville, PA/Hollidaysburg) added 10 points coming off the bench. Guard Allison Mock (fr. State College, PA/State College) compiled eight points, four assists and two steals.
At the half, Lycoming was ahead 29-28. Rowan outscored Lycoming, 35-29 in the final period. The Profs built a seven point lead (38-31) with a 13-2 run in the first four minutes. Forward Jessica Nimbley (fr. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) made a jumper that made the score 42-34 at 13:36. The Warriors pulled within three points (48-45) with 10:57 remaining. Rowan went back up by eight points (56-48) after two foul shots by DeGroff at 5:57.
Lycoming trailed by two points (57-55) after Leid’s jumper with 1:54 left. Cieplicki had a basket (1:29) and Wallace nailed two foul shots (1:02) that made the score 61-55. Lycoming had a three-pointer by Mock (0:39) to trail by three (61-58). Rowan sealed the win with one of two free throws by DeGroff and Cieplicki. DeGroff had nine points in the second half while Cieplicki and Nimbley each added eight.
There were 12 lead changes in the first half. Lycoming jumped out to an eight point lead (10-2) at 17:19. Rowan had three straight three-pointers to take the lead, 11-10 at the 15 minute mark. Guard Nicole Perrini (jr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) made the first while Wallace had the next two. The Warriors led by five (18-13) at 10:43 after Zerbee’s three. After an 8-2 run, Rowan was up by one point (21-20) at 7:49. The lead changed six times in the last seven minutes. The Profs’ last advantage was 28-27 with 21 seconds left after forward Lauren Byrne’s (sr. Paulsboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) layup. Forward Andrea Cooper (so. Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg Area) had the last basket of the half that put Lycoming up 29-28.
On Friday in the opening round, York College (PA) had a 90-83 win in two overtimes over Rowan. Lycoming lost to SUNY Brockport, 60-46. Rowan is back home on Wednesday, January 10 against conference opponent Rutgers-Camden at 8 p.m.
