GLASSBORO, NJ – New Jersey City University had four players score in double figures in a 95-82 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
Forward Dana John (so. Hillside, NJ/Pocono Mountain E. (PA)) scored a career-high 31 points and pulled down seven rebounds. John converted 10 of 16 shots from the floor, eight of 12 three-pointers and went three for three from the foul line. His eight three pointers is a NJCU record. Guard Alex Mirabel (sr. Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) made six of eight threes and eight of 15 field goals for 22 points with was a career mark. He also dished eight assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Guard Kevin Tucker (so. Jersey City, NJ/Ferris) added 13 points, while center Marques Hill (jr. Hillside, NJ/Hillside) recorded 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
New Jersey City improves to 11-7 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The win marked head coach Charles Brown’s 475 career victory. Rowan has a 13-5 overall record and a 3-4 mark in NJAC play. Guard Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) led the way for the Profs with 31 points. Baker connected on 15 of 29 field goals and went one for one from the free throw line. Forward Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) contributed 19 points and six rebounds. Guard Dan Reddan (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) and forward Dwayne Reevey (jr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) ripped down seven rebounds apiece.
The Gothic Knights led 52-43 at intermission. Baker made a layup at 16:41 to cut the lead to four points (55-51). Mirabel scored a basket and Tucker connected on a three-pointer to put New Jersey City back up by nine points (60-51) at 16:09. The Profs came within three points (62-59) at 14:27 after six straight points from Byrnes. NJCU gradually built up a six point advantage (67-61) over the next four minutes. Baker’s layup at 10:00 cut the deficit to two points (67-65). It was the closest Rowan would come for the rest of the game. The Gothic Knights scored nine straight points for a 76-65 lead at 8:34. John made three free throws, while guard Shy Martinez (jr. Union City, NJ/Union Hill) and Mirabel each nailed a three-pointer. The Gothic Knight led by as many as 15 points on four occasions with the final time (95-80) occurring with 44 seconds left to play following two foul shots by Tucker.
There were four ties in the first half with the final one (41-41) with two minutes remaining. New Jersey City outscored Rowan 11-2 to end the half. John made three three-pointers and forward Abraham Williams (sr. Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) added a layup. John finished the half with 26 points, including eight threes. Baker led Rowan with 19 points.
