MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University swimming and diving teams swept host Montclair State University on Saturday. The men won 151-111 while the women had a 143-97 victory.
The Rowan men are 5-3 overall and the women have a 7-1 record. The MSU men have a record of 7-5 while the women are 6-6 on the season.
The men won the 200 medley relay (1:40.28) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:18.97). The medley relay consisted of Kevin Baker (jr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Kevin Ovalle (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Kevin Wallace (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Dan Kelley (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick). The free relay members were Baker, Nick Giacopelli (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), Wallace and Kelley.
Baker won two individual events, the 100 breaststroke (1:01.70) and the 200 individual medley (2:03.21).
Kelley was a double winner with first places in the 50 freestyle (22.26) and 100 butterfly (55.18). Giacopelli also had two first places, the 200 freestyle (1:47.69) and the 100 free (50.37).
Chris Sykes (sr. Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Reg.) won the 100 backstroke (56.25) and Billy Swenson (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/St. Joseph) was the winner in the 200 back (2:00.95). Jeremy Soto (fr. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) took first in the 200 butterfly (2:05.16) and Wallace finished first in the 500 free (5:03.32).
Mark Anthony Spagnuolo (sr. West Orange, NJ/Bloomfield) was the winner in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.06). Andrew Donachy (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) was second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:46.21) while Patrick Buck (so. Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) was third (11:02.38). Jeff Brinberg (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) took first place in both one meter diving events. Brinberg totaled 191.85 points in the first one and he scored 289.88 in the second.
The women had first places in the 200 medley relay (1:56.52) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:51.06).
The medley relay included Stephanie McAllister (fr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Meghan McCourt (fr. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Janina Wojcik (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) and Lauren Hauser (fr. Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston). Christine DiRubbo (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Wojcik, Aileen Milde (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and Alicia Mackleer (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) were on the free relay.
Caitlin Ayres (sr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) finished first in three individual events. Ayres won the 1,000 freestyle (11:06.43), the 200 butterfly (2:14.99) and the 200 individual medley (2:23.01). McAllister was the winner in the 100 (1:03.61) and 200 backstrokes (2:17.27).
In the 50 free, Wojcik and Mackleer finished first (25.61) and second (25.62) respectively. Wojcik also took first place in the 100 butterfly (1:02.06). The Profs took first through third in the 200 freestyle. Lisa Rauch (fr. Westfield, NJ/Mt. St. Mary’s) was the winner (2:04.72), Carey Lafferty (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) took second (2:04.89) and Ashley Gagnon (fr. South Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) was third (2:04.94). Milde took first in the 100 freestyle (56.38) while Gagnon won the 500 free (5:30.73). Samantha King (fr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) finished first in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.76) while DiRubbo was second in 100 breaststroke (1:14.84). In the 1,000 free, Laura Kuczynski (sr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) took second (11:39.70) followed by Jessica Catti (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) third (11:45.80).
Rowan’s next meet is at Division II Kutztown University on Saturday, February 3 at 1 p.m.
