POMONA, NJ – The Richard Stockton College men’s basketball team won 93-83 in overtime over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Rowan University on Wednesday.
Rowan forward Dwayne Reevey (jr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) nailed the tying basket (73-73) when time ran out in regulation. With two seconds left, guard Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) put the Profs within two points. At the 12 second mark, forward Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) had a layup that made the score 73-69. Stockton was ahead by six points after guard Jerome Hubbard (so. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) nailed a three with 30 seconds left and guard Joe Albano (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) made two foul shots at the 22 second mark.
There were five lead changes in overtime before the Ospreys pulled away. Baker’s jumper gave Rowan a one point advantage (79-78) at 3:17. Hubbard recorded his sixth three-pointer of the game to go ahead 81-79 with 2:47 left. Guard Chad Davis (so. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) followed with two free throws (2:10) and forward Stanley Branch (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/St. Benedict’s) added a tip-in (1:20) for a six point advantage (85-79). The Profs trailed by four (85-81) after Reevey’s two foul shots at 1:18. Stockton had six straight points to seal the victory.
Stockton was led by forward Jon Greene (jr. Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) with 27 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Guard Mario Lancioni (jr. Runnemede, NJ/Triton Reg.) contributed with 24 points and Hubbard followed with 22. Lancioni also totaled nine assists and four steals. Branch was also in double figures with 10 points.
Richard Stockton has an overall record of 13-6 with a 4-3 conference mark. Rowan is 13-4 on the season and 3-3 in the NJAC. For the Profs, Baker scored 34 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Byrnes compiled 21 points and seven boards. Reevey grabbed nine rebounds.
Rowan was ahead 30-25 after the first half. Hubbard put the Ospreys up by eight (12-4) with a three- pointer at 15:08. The Profs answered with a 15-3 run to take over the lead 19-15 with 9:23 remaining. Baker totaled seven points in the run and Byrnes had four. Guard Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) made the tying basket (15-15) at 10:58 while Byrnes’ layup (10:27) put Rowan up for the rest of the period.
Rowan returns home on Saturday, January 27 against New Jersey City University at 3 p.m.
