Rowan Beats Ramapo, 62-49 In NJAC Game

MAHWAH, NJ – Three players scored in double figures for Rowan University in a 62-49 conference victory over host Ramapo College on Saturday.

Guard Brynn DeGroff (so. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) led the Profs with 16 points and center Katie Shaw (jr. Wallington, NJ/Wallington) followed with 14. Forward Lauren Byrne (sr. Paulsboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) compiled 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Rowan is 8-8 overall and 1-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Ramapo drops to 4-12 on the season and 0-6 in the conference. For the Roadrunners, guard Keona Palmer (sr. Port Reading, NJ/Woodbridge) totaled 15 points and 11 boards. Guard Kelly Bartz (sr. Madison, NJ/Madison) contributed with 13 points and guard Erica Maclin (so. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) added 10.

The score was tied three times in the first half before Rowan took the lead for the remainder of the game. The last tie (13-13) came at 7:04 when forward Tiffany China (so. West Orange, NJ/West Orange) hit a jumper for Ramapo. Rowan went up by seven points (20-13) after three straight baskets. DeGroff hit a three (6:26) while guard Michele Lala (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and Shaw each had a jumper at 5:28 and 4:59 respectively. With 1:16 left, Ramapo trailed by four points (25-21) after Palmer made two free throws. Guard Kristina Wallace’s (jr. Logan Twp., NJ/Clearview) jumper at the 56 second mark put the Profs ahead 27-21 at the intermission.

In the second half, Rowan outscored Ramapo, 35-28. The Profs started with six straight points to lead by 12 (33-21) at 17:31. Byrne had the first and last basket in the run while Wallace hit two foul shots in between. Rowan had a surge of seven unanswered points for a 17 point advantage (40-23) at 14:29. Shaw scored two baskets and a foul shot while Byrne made a jumper. The Profs had their biggest lead of 21 points (46-25) after DeGroff’s three-pointer with 12:03 remaining. The Roadrunners started a come back with a 13-3 run in a five minute span and trailed 49-38. Maclin and Bartz each contributed with four points and Palmer added three. DeGroff put Rowan back up by 16 points (60-44) after a three (3:47) and a layup (3:18).

Rowan’s next game is at home on Monday, January 22 against nonconference opponent Salisbury University at 6 p.m.
