Baker's 42 Points Pace Rowan Past Kean, 93-87

GLASSBORO, NJ – Guard Thomas Baker totaled 42 points and seven rebounds to lead Rowan University to a 93-87 win over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Kean University on Wednesday.

Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) made 14 of 24 field goals, two of two three-pointers and 12 of 14 free throws. The 42 points was a career-high for Baker. Forward Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) added 14 points and nine rebounds. Guard Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) came off the bench to score 12 points and dish eight assists. Forward Dwayne Reevey (jr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) contributed nine points, six rebounds and five assists.

Rowan has won 10 straight games and has a 13-2 overall record and a 3-1 NJAC mark. Kean is 11-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference. For the Cougars, guard Bryan Keller (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) scored 23 points. Guards Lamar Wright (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) and Bryan Miller (sr. Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) were also in double figures with 19 and 10 points respectively. Forward Brett Wyatt (sr. Elizabeth, NJ/St. Mary’s) chipped in with nine points and five boards.

Rowan was ahead 44-29 at halftime. Keller connected on a three-pointer at 14:43 to bring the Cougars within 11 points (53-42). Rowan had a 56-42 lead at 14:02 following a foul shot by Reevey. At 12:51, Keller nailed another three that cut the deficit to nine points (58-49). The Profs brought the score to 70-56 with 10:10 remaining. Baker made a layup at 8:27 for an 11 point advantage (75-64). Kean went on a 9-1 run to come within three points (76-73). Keller had seven points in the stretch. Baker connected on a three pointer with 1:06 left to put Rowan ahead 89-83. Keller made two foul shots (00:57) and Wright had a layup (00:27) to make it a two point game (89-87). The Profs ended the game with Baker and Reevey each making two foul shots to preserve the victory.

In the first half, Rowan had a 7-6 lead at 13:32. The Profs scored the next six points to go up by seven points (13-6). At 7:45, Rowan had a nine point advantage (24-15). The Profs went on an 8-0 run that put them ahead 32-15 at 5:42. Baker had six of the eight points. The closest Kean would come was 10 points (33-23) with 4:02 remaining. Baker led all first half scorers with 17 points. Byrnes added eight points and seven boards. Wright was Kean’s leader with 11 points.

Rowan travels to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent William Paterson University on Saturday, January 20 at 1 p.m.
