ABINGTON, PA – Guard Thomas Baker scored 24 points to lead Rowan University to an 82-69 win over Penn State Abington in a nonconference game on Monday.
Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) made 11 of 16 shots from the floor and went two for three from the foul line. Forward Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Byrnes also dished five assists. Guards Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) and Dan Reddan (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) contributed with 13 and 10 points respectively. Forward Dwayne Reevey (jr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) grabbed eight rebounds and blocked six shots.
Rowan has a 12-2 record and has won nine straight games. Penn State Abington is 8-5. Forward Scott Brandt scored 16 points for the Lions. He made four of nine three pointers. Forward Jamal Oliver added 14 points and seven boards. Guard Tyrone Young chipped in with nine points and six assists, while guard Marvin Dutton had nine points and five steals.
Rowan was ahead 34-29 at halftime. The Profs scored two straight baskets at the start of the second period to lead 38-29. The Lions went on a 7-2 run to make the score 40-36 at 18:04. Brandt connected on a three pointer at 15:56 to bring Penn State Abington within five points (48-43). Rowan scored the next six points for a 54-43 advantage at 13:10. Baker had four points, while Reevey added two. Penn State Abington narrowed the lead to four points (57-53) after a tip-in by Brandt at 8:44. The Profs gradually took over the game and built up a 16 point advantage (79-63) with 1:25 remaining.
In the first half, the score was tied (5-5) at 17:06. Rowan went up 13-8 at 13:52 following a layup by Bowser. Shiver made a jumper at 8:52 to put the Profs ahead by eight (19-11). Penn State Abington fought back and came with two points (23-21) after a three pointer by Young at 5:33. Rowan led by two points (25-23) at 4:24. The Profs went on an 8-0 run for a 33-23 advantage. Baker scored six points and Reevey had two in the stretch. Dutton connected on a three at the buzzer to make it 34-29 at intermission.
