GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University swimming and diving teams swept the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday in a dual meet. The men won 162-131 while the women had a 149-102 victory.

The Rowan men are 4-2 overall and the women have a 5-1 record. The USMMA men have an overall record of 4-2 and the women are 3-3.

The Rowan men finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:39.60) with Kevin Baker (jr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Kevin Ovalle (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Kevin Wallace (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Sam Spracklin (fr. Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.). Baker won three individual events, the 100 (59.86) and 200 (2:10.84) breaststrokes and the 200 individual medley (1:59.66). Dan Kelley (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) was a double winner in the 50 (22.27) and 100 (49.17) freestyles.

In the 1,000 freestyle, Andrew Donachy (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) had a winning time of 10:29.69 followed by James Sheerin (jr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) second in 10:35.20. Donachy also won the 200 backstroke (2:00.65). Nick Giacopelli (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) took first in the 200 freestyle (1:47.98) while Stephen Tucker (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) was third (1:52.97). Wallace had a first place in the 200 butterfly (2:04.39). Rowan finished first through third in the 100 butterfly with Wallace (55:02), Spracklin (56.15) and Tucker (56.61).

In the diving, Jeff Brinberg (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) won the one meter with 317.70 points and the three meter with 322.65. Bryan Carlisle (so. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) had second places in the one (260.10) and three (265.80) meter diving. Nate McCarson (so. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) finished third in the one meter (208.50) diving while Dan Syzmanski (fr. Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) was third in the three meter (226.05).

Billy Swenson (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/St. Joseph) had second places in the 100 (57.06) and 200 (2:01.05) backstrokes and the 200 individual medley (2:10.37). Sheerin finished second in the 500 freestyle (5:07.35) followed by Patrick Buck (so. Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) third (5:16.26). Mark Anthony Spagnuolo (sr. West Orange, NJ/Bloomfield) was second (1:03.29) in the 100 breaststroke.

The Prof women won the 200 medley relay (1:56.06) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:55.54). The medley relay included Stephanie McAllister (fr. Micleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Samantha King (fr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City), Janina Wojcik (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River) and Aileen Milde (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury). Wojcik, Milde, Christine DiRubbo (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Alicia Mackleer (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) were on the free relay.

Caitlin Ayres (sr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) was the winner in two events, the 1,000 (11:04.37) and 500 (5:28.34) freestyles. Ashley Gagnon (fr. S. Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) took first in the 200 freestyle (2:05.33) and King won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.75). McAllister and Lisa Rauch (fr. Westfield, NJ/Mt. St. Mary’s) finished first (1:03.15) and second (1:06.22) respectively in the 100 backstroke. Mackleer had a wining time of 25.43 in the 50 freestyle.

The women took first through third in the 100 freestyle with Mackleer (55.76), DiRubbo (57.70) and Rauch (59.11). In the 200 breaststroke, Adrienne Giordano (sr. Livingston, NJ/Governor Livingston) was first (2:39.83) and Megan Isaken (so. Leonardo, NJ/Middletown S.) was second (2:48.48). Carey Lafferty (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) took second in the 500 freestyle (5:36.70) and Laura Kuczynski (sr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) was third (5:42.35). In the 100 butterfly, Wojcik was first (1:01.87) followed by Milde second (1:04.31) and Bethany Schmid (so. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) third (1:10.92). In the 200 individual medley, King was the winner (2:18.37) followed by Meghan McCourt (fr. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) in second place (2:19.69).

Rowan has its last home meet of the season on Wednesday, January 24 against The College of New Jersey at 6 p.m.
